Sam Neill Questioned His Solitary Life as a 'Personal Failing' Before His Death
Sam Neill, the Jurassic Park star, questioned whether being "a solitary single man" was a result of "personal failing" or simply "bad luck." His reflections emerged in his memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This?, just days after his death at 78.
Neill's marital history includes nearly 30 years with Noriko Watanabe, from whom he separated. He dated journalist Laura Tingle from 2018 to 2021. After this breakup, he embraced single life, acknowledging it suited him but also admitting to feelings of loneliness.

In his memoir, he stated, "I am a solitary single man now." He expressed uncertainty about his relationship status, wondering if it was a personal failing or just bad luck. He noted, "I am past my use-by date and would not marry again," while also sharing that dating had become rare for him.
During his battle with blood cancer, Neill felt he "could have done with a bit of companionship." Despite this, he expressed gratitude for the women who positively influenced his life. He reflected on significant relationships, including the 11 years spent with actress Lisa Harrow after meeting on the set of Omen III.

He wrote about the joy of having their son, Tim, stating, "The best thing about that relationship was having our son." Neill married Noriko in 1989, and they had a daughter, Elena. He also adopted Maiko, Noriko's daughter from a previous marriage. Their marriage lasted nearly three decades before they separated.
In his memoir, he mentioned, "My ex-wife, film make-up artist Noriko Watanabe, and I were married for almost 30 years. Our daughter, Elena, is a Melbourne-based tattooist." He expressed gratitude for the "three wonderful years" spent with Laura Tingle.
Before these relationships, Neill had a son named Andrew in his early twenties who was placed for adoption. They reunited in 1994.

Neill passed away surrounded by family shortly after announcing he was cancer-free. His family released a statement saying, "It is with immense sadness that the whānau of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July, in Sydney, Australia."
They added that he passed with dignity and expressed gratitude to the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their care. The family requested privacy as they navigate their loss.

Fans reacted with heartbreak upon learning of Neill's death. One commented on social media, "RIP. A legend of an actor!"
Another expressed sadness over the news, calling him an "incredible actor and lovely human being." A third fan shared their grief, stating, "Oh my heart is broken. Sending love to his friends and family."
A fan remarked on his presence and energy, saying he was someone whose company was enjoyable and lamented the loss as a sad way to start the day.
