Sydney Sweeney's Euphoria: Naked Ambition and OnlyFans Obsession Unleashed
Sydney Sweeney's character Cassie is a walking embodiment of desperation, driven by an insatiable need for love and validation, as she navigates the murky waters of OnlyFans fame in Euphoria's third season.
“From the very beginning, you can see that Cassie has this need to be loved. She has a need to be validated by other people,” the actress, 28, bluntly stated, dissecting her character's obsession with external approval in a recent interview.
Before filming kicked off, creator Sam Levinson laid out his vision for Cassie. “He actually, as we were finishing up season two, started hinting at different ideas that he was putting together for season three,” Sweeney recalled. She knew well in advance that Cassie would be married to Nate and living in suburbia, with her mental state spiraling further into chaos.
Levinson kept Sweeney in the loop about her character’s trajectory, but she only grasped the full scope once she received the final scripts. They even discussed her emotional readiness for the nude scenes that would dominate her storyline.
“He sent me all the scripts and it already had all of Cassie’s scenes in it, the OnlyFans scenes,” she explained. “He asked me how I felt about it, and I told him, ‘Look, I’m playing a character.’” Sweeney made it clear that while she doesn’t endorse Cassie’s choices, her job as an actor is to bring the character’s tumultuous life to the screen authentically.
In this season, Cassie’s marriage to high school sweetheart Nate (Jacob Elordi) sets the stage for her plunge into the world of adult content creation. As Nate works during the day, Cassie pursues her ambitions as an OnlyFans model. The portrayal of her career ignited backlash from NSFW creators who criticized the show’s depiction of their industry. Despite the uproar, Levinson remains steadfast in his creative direction and praises Sweeney’s dedication to the role.
“I think she’s a totally fearless actor. She’s also just wonderfully professional, and shows up just game every day,” Levinson declared during a podcast episode. “I adore working with her because there’s such a flexibility in terms of the performance.”
