Trump Clashes with Irish Reporter Over Iran School Strike That Killed 100 Kids

May 09 2026

Donald Trump didn’t hold back when an Irish reporter confronted him about the Minab school strike that left over 100 Iranian schoolchildren dead. Niall Stanage, the journalist in question, pressed the President for answers outside the White House, sparking a heated exchange.

The tragic missile strike occurred on February 28, marking the onset of war in Iran. A missile hit Shajarah Tayyebeh elementary school in Minab, resulting in the deaths of more than 150 individuals, predominantly young girls.

As Trump prepared to board Marine One en route to an LIV Golf event in Sterling, Virginia, Stanage asked, “We’re almost 10 weeks since a missile hit a school in Iran. Who fired that missile?”

Trump’s response? “That’s under study right now. We’ll give you a report as soon as we have it.” Stanage later shared the exchange on X, stating: “I am the reporter here - and imho [in my honest opinion] the question should be asked more often. More than 100 children were reported killed at Minab.”

Social media erupted with reactions. One user commented, “Trump and team are going to say ‘we’re looking into it’ until you stop asking.” Another chimed in, “The question should be not ‘who fired’, but ‘who gave the order to kill those children, you or Hegseth?’ Let him throw Hegseth or the generals under the bus to save himself.” A third user pointedly asked, “We know who fired the missile. The real question is: where is the accountability?”

Experts have identified the missile as a US Tomahawk, raising serious concerns about military accountability. In March, Trump initially suggested an Iranian Tomahawk was responsible for the strike, despite Iran lacking such weaponry. He quickly backtracked, admitting he “didn’t know enough about it.”

War Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that military personnel were investigating the incident, emphasizing that the US military “never” targets civilians. However, preliminary findings reported by a major publication indicated that the US was indeed responsible for the strike due to its proximity to an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps base.

According to reports, Central Command officers used outdated data from the Defense Intelligence Agency to compile target coordinates, leading to this catastrophic error.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt dismissed these findings, asserting that the investigation was ongoing. When pressed by a reporter from the same publication about Trump’s claims regarding Iranian involvement, Leavitt defended the President’s right to express his opinions and stated he would accept the Pentagon’s findings once they were released.

Leavitt also took aim at the media, accusing them of “harassing” the administration with relentless inquiries and unverified reports. She then pivoted to praise Trump’s military efforts, claiming it’s essential to eliminate terrorists who threaten civilians and destabilize the global economy.
