Trump Faces a Sea of Booing at Madison Square Garden During NBA Finals

Trump strutted into Madison Square Garden for Game 3 of the NBA Finals, but the crowd's reaction was anything but welcoming. As he appeared on the jumbotron during the national anthem, a wave of loud booing erupted, drowning out any cheers.

Despite the jeers, Trump maintained a smile and saluted through the anthem, but the moment quickly shifted to raucous cheers for Knicks star Jalen Brunson as the camera panned away.

Positioned in Knicks owner Jim Dolan’s box, Trump was flanked by a cadre of administration officials, including Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum. White House deputy chief of staff Dan Scavino and Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin were also in attendance.

Family members joined the spectacle, with special envoy Jared Kushner and granddaughter Kai Trump among those present. This marked Trump as the first sitting president to attend an NBA Finals game, a notable milestone in his attendance record at high-profile sporting events.

Game 3 was the 17th sporting event Trump has attended since returning to office last year. His lineup includes major events like the Super Bowl, Daytona 500, and the men’s tennis U.S. Open final, often accompanied by family and administration allies.

The Knicks entered Game 3 with a commanding 2-0 lead over the San Antonio Spurs, riding a 13-game winning streak. However, Trump's presence necessitated heightened security measures at Madison Square Garden, enforcing a strict no-bag policy and TSA-style screening for ticket holders.

The city opted against hosting a watch party outside the Garden, igniting backlash from fans. The New York Police Department and Secret Service cited “heightened security requirements associated” with Trump’s attendance as the reason for this decision.

A secure zone was established in midtown Manhattan near the arena, effectively banning both pedestrians and vehicles from passing through the area.
