Trump Faces Impeachment Support That Echoes Nixon's Downfall

Apr 23 2026

A new poll indicates that a significant portion of U.S. adults favors impeaching President Donald Trump, a statistic that mirrors sentiments during Richard Nixon's Watergate scandal, as reported by pollster G. Elliott Morris.

Conducted shortly after Trump's controversial remarks regarding Iran, the Strength In Numbers/Verasight poll surveyed 1,514 adults over 18. The findings revealed that 55% support a House impeachment vote, while 37% oppose it, and 8% remain undecided, according to Morris's analysis shared on his platform.

Morris highlighted that the net approval rating for a potential third impeachment of Trump stands at +18, suggesting that public sentiment is reminiscent of the numbers Nixon faced before his resignation in 1974.

“The 55% figure is striking by contemporary impeachment standards,” Morris noted, emphasizing the unusual level of support for Trump's impeachment.

Trump's alarming threat to obliterate Iran's civilization has ignited backlash from various political factions, prompting discussions about invoking the 25th Amendment to remove him from office.

His posts on Truth Social have raised concerns about his fitness for presidency, with over 85 House members expressing support for either impeachment or the invocation of the 25th Amendment, as reported earlier this month.

Notably, the poll shows that even 20% of Trump’s own supporters back the idea of impeachment. Morris pointed out that while comparisons between Trump and Nixon's polling figures are not entirely equivalent, they nonetheless place Trump in “Nixon resignation” territory.

The survey conducted during Nixon's tenure asked if his actions warranted removal from office, with 58% of respondents affirming that they did. In contrast, the current poll focuses on support for impeachment rather than outright removal.

Despite these differences, Morris asserts that Trump's current approval ratings in his second term reflect a troubling trend not seen since Nixon's presidency.
