Trump Flirts with a Name Change That Might Not 'Sit Well' in Quirky Interview
During a live interview on Fox News, President Donald Trump proposed an unusual idea: renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of Trump.” This unexpected suggestion came as he discussed the potential rebranding with host Maria Bartiromo.
“I decided not to do it. I think maybe it was — I think that one maybe wouldn’t have worked out, I’m not so sure, you’ll have to tell me,” Trump remarked, previously indicating that he was “joking” about the name change.
Bartiromo appeared taken aback at times during the conversation, particularly when Trump elaborated on a recent claim made on Truth Social regarding a “massive” influx of empty oil tankers heading to the Gulf to load what he described as “the best and ‘sweetest’ oil (and gas!) anywhere in the World.”
He seized the opportunity to highlight one of his initiatives since returning to office: his effort to rename the gulf, which has held its name for over 400 years, to the “Gulf of America.” While some mapping services, including Google, adopted his preferred name last year, many others continued to use the traditional title.
Trump argued that the existing name was illogical, asserting that the U.S. possesses “93%” of the gulf’s “frontage.” However, data from Sovereign Limits, as reported by The New York Times, indicates that the U.S. actually claims only 46% of the gulf—3% less than Mexico.
As Trump rambled on about his “Gulf of America” concept, Bartiromo attempted to steer the conversation back on track.
Yet, Trump was not finished with his self-referential naming scheme. “It’s going to be called the ‘Gulf of Trump,’ and then I said, ‘You know, that’s not going to play too well,’” he stated while Bartiromo struggled to regain control of the interview.
He quickly added, “You know I’m kidding. You know I’m kidding.”
Bartiromo responded, “You’re being facetious, I know that Mr. President.”
