Trump Issues Stark Warning to CNN Over Iran Coverage Following Ceasefire Announcement

Apr 08 2026

President Donald Trump unleashed a fierce rebuke against CNN on Tuesday night, targeting the network's portrayal of Iran's assertion of a "great victory" following his decision to extend the ceasefire deadline by two weeks.

Initially, Trump had set a deadline of 8 p.m. ET for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, cautioning that failure to comply would result in catastrophic consequences. However, just 90 minutes before this ultimatum, the White House announced a shift: both nations would engage in negotiations aimed at halting hostilities, which included reopening the vital waterway and pausing military actions for a fortnight.

In the wake of this announcement, CNN updated its live blog with details of Iran's response. The report stated, "Iran says it has achieved a great victory and forced the United States to accept its 10-point plan," citing Iranian state media.

Trump reacted vehemently on Truth Social, accusing CNN of committing "a crime" by disseminating what he deemed false information. "The alleged Statement put out by CNN World News is a FRAUD, as CNN well knows," he asserted, claiming the network had linked to a dubious source and misrepresented the facts.

He demanded that CNN retract its reporting and threatened an investigation into the network's practices. Despite his claims, Trump lacks authority over CNN's editorial decisions, as it operates independently.

"Authorities are looking to determine whether or not a crime was committed on the issuance of the Fake CNN World Statement," Trump stated, insisting that CNN should issue a full apology for its "terrible reporting." He promised that results from any investigation would be forthcoming.

Brendan Carr, head of the Federal Communications Commission, chimed in via social media, suggesting it was "time for change" at CNN. He criticized the network for what he termed "outrageous conduct," particularly during such a sensitive moment in national security.

CNN defended its reporting, asserting that the statement in question was sourced from official Iranian representatives and corroborated by multiple Iranian media outlets. "We received the statement from specific official Iranian spokespeople who are known to us," the network clarified.

The Trump administration's disdain for CNN has been evident. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth expressed enthusiasm for David Ellison's potential takeover of the network, suggesting it would improve coverage.

Other media outlets echoed CNN's report on Iran's claims of victory. The New York Times noted that Iran's National Security Council congratulated its citizens for their resilience during the conflict with the U.S. and Israel, asserting that the U.S. had accepted all terms of Iran's peace proposal.

Trump's administration was not alone in its criticism of media narratives framing the ceasefire talks as a win for Iran. White House Communications Director Steven Cheung lashed out at a leftist commentator who suggested Trump's acceptance of Iran's plan would signify a major defeat for the U.S.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt countered these narratives, declaring Trump's actions a triumph for American interests. “This is a victory for the United States that President Trump and our incredible military made happen,” she stated.

Iran's acknowledgment of willingness to negotiate included references to Trump's agreement to use its 10-point plan as a negotiation framework. Despite efforts from the White House to shape public perception, discussions among major U.S. cable news networks revealed differing interpretations of who emerged victorious.

On CNN, anchor Erin Burnett suggested Trump had "backed down," while MS NOW's Symone Sanders-Townsend echoed this sentiment, stating that Trump had "caved." Conversely, Fox News' Laura Ingraham claimed that Iran was the one that "blinked."

In his ceasefire announcement, Trump emphasized that Iran had consented to the "COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz." However, subsequent reports indicated that Iran might continue imposing tolls on cargo ships traversing this critical route, with funds earmarked for reconstruction efforts.
