Trump’s Blinding UFC Lights Threaten Pilot Safety Over DC Skies
A commercial airline pilot has lodged serious safety complaints after powerful lighting from a UFC event on the White House grounds reportedly blinded flight crews during their approach to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
This pilot, who remains anonymous due to restrictions on public statements, described intense white lighting from the construction of a UFC octagon on the South Lawn that shone directly into their cockpit.
The octagon is set to host a series of UFC fights on Sunday evening, coinciding with President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday celebration.
The pilot characterized the incident as one of the most severe visibility disruptions they have ever faced in their career.
Illumination from the event occurred during the critical final stages of landing, a phase where pilots depend heavily on external visual references. The pilot claimed the glare was “10 times worse than any laser illumination event” they had previously encountered.
While laser strikes are a known aviation hazard, this incident involved high-powered white event lighting instead. The pilot noted that the intense glare produced a similarly dangerous effect, temporarily impairing the flight crew’s vision.
The airspace surrounding Reagan National Airport is among the most sensitive and tightly regulated in the United States. Aircraft routinely navigate low-altitude flight paths over significant Washington landmarks during their final approach.
Aviation safety experts have long warned that sudden exposure to intense brightness in these areas can severely compromise a pilot’s night vision, particularly when transitioning from cockpit instruments to external visual cues for landing.
The Independent has reached out to the White House for comment regarding this issue.
After the flight, the pilot filed formal reports with both the Federal Aviation Administration and NASA’s Aviation Safety Reporting System, a confidential platform for industry professionals to document safety hazards.
The pilot also contacted a local FAA office directly to report the situation. FAA personnel advised them to reach out to the White House concerning the lighting concerns.
Currently, federal authorities have not indicated whether a formal investigation will be initiated, and it remains unclear if other flight crews operating in the area on Sunday night experienced similar visual disruptions.
This report emerges during a tense period for aviation safety in the Washington area, following a fatal midair collision over the Potomac River in January 2025 that resulted in 67 fatalities involving an American Airlines regional jet and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter.
