Trump's Chosen One: Andy Barr Dominates Kentucky Senate GOP Primary

May 21 2026

Rep. Andy Barr has just clinched the Senate Republican primary in Kentucky, setting the stage for a showdown against Democrats this November. With the backing of Donald Trump, Barr is on a fast track to fill the shoes of retiring Sen. Mitch McConnell.

In a race that saw former Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron as his main rival, Barr's victory was all but assured after Trump nudged MAGA businessman Nate Morris to exit the race. The former president’s endorsement proved crucial, especially since he dominated Kentucky by a staggering 30 points in the 2024 election.

Barr, a seasoned seven-term congressman, has been a staunch ally of Trump, consistently defending him through thick and thin. He voted against both impeachment articles in 2019 and stood firm during Trump’s second impeachment in January 2021. When the Ukraine scandal erupted, Barr dismissed the president's controversial request for dirt on Joe Biden as mere “routine diplomacy.”

His campaign has been a love letter to Trump, filled with fiery rhetoric against “woke liberals.” In a February ad, he boldly declared, “It’s not a sin to be white. It’s not against the law to be male. And it shouldn’t be disqualifying to be a Christian.”

Looking ahead, Barr is poised to face off against Democrat Charles Booker in the general election. Booker, who previously served in the state House and made history as Kentucky’s youngest Black lawmaker, is gearing up for a fierce battle against Barr’s Trump-fueled momentum.
