Trump's Wild Claims of a '900-Foot Gash' in Reflecting Pool Exposed as Fabrication
President Donald Trump unleashed a bizarre claim about the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, alleging a “300 yards long” gash, which translates to an astonishing 900 feet, supposedly inflicted by “vandals.”
On Truth Social, Trump insisted that the pool was drained to address the damage he attributes to these so-called thugs. He previously stated the gash was 300 feet long, but now he’s upped the ante with this new measurement.
“We drained the beautiful ‘Reflecting Pool’ today in order to fix the scars and damage that was done by the Vandals two weeks ago,” Trump declared. “The slashes were 300 yards long, and the floor of the pool was cut and then pulled upward, with great force, by these thugs.”
He further claimed that the Parks Department had to empty the water to repair the basin, promising it would be refilled soon. Trump demanded accountability for what he called damage done by “Country hating sleazebags.”

However, locals in Washington quickly took to social media to dismantle Trump's narrative. They pointed out that no evidence of a “300-foot” or “900-foot” gash was visible in the drained pool.
Democratic influencer Matt Rein posted images of the pool, stating, “Did a walk around of the Reflecting Pool today, and as others have also noted, there is no sign of a ‘350 foot’ gash, let alone any gashes at all.”
Rein continued to document his findings, asserting, “I’m here at the Reflecting Pool and crews are almost done draining all of the water … no ‘350 foot’ gash found from my vantage point.”
Mockery ensued online as users questioned Trump's repeated comments about renovations. Some even criticized the “American flag blue” color he ordered for the pool, which appeared dirty and indistinguishable.

“Where’s the blue liner? Down the drain like the millions for this no bid contract?” one user quipped on X.
Crews began draining the Reflecting Pool last week as Trump's renovation efforts continue to falter. His initial goal was to have it ready by July 4 for the nation’s 250th birthday.
Trump initially claimed his renovations would last a century. Yet, just weeks after completion last month, algae blooms plagued the water, and pieces of the new coating began peeling off.
While Trump blames vandals for the peeling, critics argue it stems from poor workmanship.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum confirmed in a recent interview that this new draining was planned. He noted that debris from an extensive Independence Day fireworks display might still be present in the water.
Burgum stated, “Drain the water, clean up the fireworks stuff. Repair the vandalism that was done. Fill it back up again.”
The Reflecting Pool project is just one of many initiatives Trump has undertaken in Washington. He has also demolished the White House’s East Wing for a $400 million ballroom and proposed a towering arch between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.
Trump announced his intentions to beautify the Reflecting Pool this spring, aiming for completion before the nation’s 250th birthday celebrations.
