Trump Unleashes Tariff Threats on Canada Amid Wildfire Smoke Crisis

Jul 18 2026

President Trump unleashed a barrage of threats against Canada, demanding higher tariffs due to wildfires that have engulfed vast regions of the Midwest and East Coast in smoke, holding the northern neighbor accountable for failing to control the infernos.

"We are holding Canada responsible for the fact that they are not properly maintaining their Forests, and Brush therein, and the United States is being unnecessarily invaded by filthy, polluted, and unhealthy air, the quality of which is dangerous, and totally unacceptable!" Trump declared on Truth Social, slamming Canada for "Willful Negligence."

He claimed the situation is "costing the United States Billions of Dollars," insisting that these pollution costs must be added to the TARIFFS Canada currently pays.

Trump indicated he would bring this issue up with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

In response to Trump's comments, Carney's office directed inquiries to Canadian Minister of Emergency Management Eleanor Olszewski, who stated that Canada is "working with urgency alongside provincial and territorial partners." She emphasized that Canada has invested billions in forest fire prevention in recent years.

"Canada and the United States have a long history of working together to fight wildfires on both sides of the border — it is a history that both countries benefit from and that we are building on during this challenging wildfire season," Olszewski noted, highlighting Canadian firefighters' assistance during last year's Los Angeles wildfires.

Earlier this week, U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra praised the "outstanding cooperation between the United States and Canada" in tackling the "shared challenge" of wildfires. On Friday, Hoekstra shared Trump's social media post criticizing Canada.

Trump's relationship with Canada has been fraught with tension over trade disputes, NATO disagreements, and his controversial suggestion to make Canada the U.S.' 51st state.

The Trump administration's tariffs on Canadian goods currently sit at 10%, although most imports are exempt due to compliance with the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, a trade deal established during Trump's first term. A recent Supreme Court ruling limited Trump's ability to impose tariffs using economic emergency powers.

As hundreds of wildfires rage across Canada, smoke has drifted into major U.S. cities like New York City, Chicago, Detroit, and Washington D.C., creating severe air quality issues. Minnesota is also grappling with wildfires.

Some Republican lawmakers have pointed fingers at the Canadian government. Four Michigan Republicans sent a letter to Carney this week stating "our patience has run out," accusing Canada of "chronic under-investment in forest thinning, fuel reduction, and prescribed burns."

"This is the third consecutive year we have had to write to Canadian officials about a crisis that Canada has the tools to prevent and has chosen not to," said Reps. John James, Lisa McClain, John Moolenaar, and Jack Bergman. They added: "Our constituents are breathing the consequences of this failure right now, and they deserve better than to be told, again, that it will be handled."

GOP Sen. Bernie Moreno of Ohio suggested sanctions against Canada. Republican Rep. Nick Langworthy from upstate New York stated on X that "there should be consequences" if Canada does not take "meaningful action" to prevent future wildfires.

Carney briefly addressed the lawmakers' criticisms on Thursday, pointing out climate change's role in extreme weather and rebuking the United States for retreating from clean energy initiatives.

"Fighting climate change is the responsibility of all countries, including the United States," Carney told reporters.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford, whose province is battling rampant wildfires, was more direct in his response.

"I truly believe the Americans are good neighbors," he said Friday. "If there's some politicians out there chirping away, well, maybe what you should do rather than complain is send support, send help, because we have done the exact same thing for our American friends."
