Brace for Impact: 100% Chance of a Super El Niño This Year

May 19 2026

Weather watchers, hold onto your hats! The latest European forecast has dropped a bombshell: a 100% chance of a super El Niño brewing, which could mean a wetter fall and winter for the southern U.S. and a potential hurricane slowdown.

The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) has cranked up the heat with its May long-range forecast model, signaling that we might be in for the strongest El Niño ever by November. Just a few months ago, in March, predictions were far less optimistic, with only a 55% chance of hitting that super threshold by September.

According to the FOX Forecast Center, this early prediction of such a powerful El Niño could be one for the history books. Typically, when an El Niño of this magnitude rolls in, it tends to suppress hurricane activity in the Atlantic while ramping things up in the Eastern Pacific.

But don’t get too comfortable just yet—the ECMWF isn’t showing a significant drop in hurricane forecasts for the season. This means we might not feel the full brunt of the super El Niño effects until later in the season. The latest numbers suggest we could see 13 named storms and 6 hurricanes, which is pretty close to the average of 14 named storms and 7 hurricanes.

As for the Gulf region? The ECMWF indicates near-normal activity but predicts above-average rainfall in the northern Gulf. Meanwhile, Atlantic water temperatures are expected to rise above average for most of the season.

However, don’t expect a complete shutdown of tropical activity across the Atlantic Main Development Region. The FOX Forecast Center warns that while El Niño is likely to dampen activity, it won’t eliminate it entirely.

Mark your calendars: hurricane season kicks off in the Eastern Pacific on May 15, followed by the Atlantic season starting June 1. With this extended forecast now in play, models are showing above-average rain across the South, which could be a game-changer for regions grappling with drought.

Winter months are shaping up to be particularly beneficial for the Southeast, as they brace for what could be a transformative weather pattern ahead.
