Charles Barkley Unleashes Critique on Trump During March Madness

During CBS’ March Madness coverage on Sunday, Charles Barkley shifted focus from basketball to a pressing social issue, addressing President Donald Trump’s immigration policies.

This pivot came after a segment featuring University of Connecticut standout Alex Karaban, whose family immigrated from Eastern Europe. “I want to be very careful with my words right now. Because this is a really touchy subject for me,” Barkley stated, expressing his admiration for Karaban and his family.

“The way some of these other immigrants are getting treated in our country right now is a travesty and a disgrace,” he continued, emphasizing the distinction between “amazing immigrants” and those who commit crimes. “What’s going on in our country — what we’re doing to some of these amazing immigrants — is really unfortunate and it’s really sad.”

He elaborated, “That’s a great immigrant story — we have a lot of great immigrant stories out there, whose stories need to be told. But some of the stuff that’s happening to immigrants in our country right now is really unfortunate and is really unfair. Immigrants built this country, and we should admire them and respect them.”

Host Nate Burleson, visibly moved by Barkley’s heartfelt remarks, responded, “Chuck, I love you, bro.”

Barkley’s comments coincided with nationwide “No Kings” rallies, where Americans protested against Trump’s treatment of immigrants and other pressing issues, including the ongoing conflict in Iran.

As the partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security continues, Democrats are pushing for limitations on ICE operations amid reports of fatalities involving federal agents during these actions.

Last year, Barkley also made headlines during the NCAA Tournament for candid remarks on various topics beyond basketball. Meanwhile, Karaban's team has advanced to the Final Four following a thrilling victory over Duke. The Huskies are set to face Illinois in one semifinal, while Arizona will take on Michigan in the other.
