Charlie Kirk's Mentor Jeff Webb Dies in Pickleball Accident

Mar 23 2026

Jeff Webb, a prominent figure in conservative circles and the cheerleading industry, passed away at the age of 76. His death follows a serious accident while playing pickleball, which resulted in a traumatic head injury two weeks prior.

On March 19, Webb succumbed to his injuries after being hospitalized, with his family ultimately deciding to take him off life support. His contributions to cheerleading and conservative politics have left a lasting impact.

In 1974, Webb founded Varsity Spirit, a company that revolutionized cheerleading through competitions, training camps, and apparel. It is now recognized as the leading brand in the cheerleading world.

Varsity Spirit confirmed Webb's passing in a statement released on March 20. “Jeff played a pivotal role in shaping cheerleading as it exists today and in building a community that has impacted generations of athletes, coaches, and teams,” the statement noted. “His recent contributions helped grow the sport both in the United States and globally, including his work with the International Cheer Union, which achieved full recognition by the International Olympic Committee in 2021.”

The organization extended condolences to Webb’s family and friends, acknowledging the profound influence he had on the spirit community.

Turning Point USA, the conservative organization founded by Charlie Kirk, also paid tribute to Webb. They described him as “a visionary who helped shape generations of young leaders and believed deeply in the power of community and country.” The organization expressed that he would be greatly missed.

Webb was present with Kirk’s family at the White House when Kirk was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in October 2025. Kirk was tragically shot while speaking at Utah Valley University in September 2025 at just 31 years old.

In the wake of Kirk’s death, Webb remarked to Real America’s Voice that “we probably lost a future president.” He recalled their first meeting when Kirk was just 24 years old, already making strides with Turning Point USA. “He was really still developing the strategy,” Webb said. “I met him through a friend at dinner in Atlanta, and like so many people will say about him, we just hit it off.”

Webb praised Kirk’s charisma and sense of humor, stating, “He had everything. He was fun to be around.” In January 2021, Webb took on a new role as co-publisher and senior news editor at Human Events, further solidifying his influence in conservative media.
