A Deputy US Marshal was shot dead while serving an arrest warrant in Louisiana on Monday.

The US Marshals Violent Offender Task Force, alongside local sheriff's detectives, was engaged in a law enforcement operation targeting a wanted fugitive in Alexandria around 3 p.m. when gunfire erupted, according to the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The slain Deputy US Marshal, whose identity remains undisclosed, was confirmed deceased by the US Marshals Service.

Following a lengthy standoff, the suspect, who suffered injuries during the incident, was apprehended and taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Details surrounding whether officers returned fire or the nature of the suspect's injuries remain unclear.

A woman in the vicinity described the panic as she instructed her children to “just get down” amid the gunfire, as reported by KALB.

“I had them in the room, down. Because I didn’t know what was going on,” she recounted.

“Not even five seconds later, that’s when we heard the gunshots. It just went boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. So, the cops ran back out.”

Some locals expressed shock at the incident, describing the fugitive as “a good man” who was “always in good spirits.”

“I actually gave him a ride over to Popeyes one day, and he spoke a lot of life into me. He was a good dude. He had a lot of wisdom on him,” said Louis Means, a cashier at a nearby Tobacco Plus shop.

“You never would have expected something like this.”

The Louisiana State Police are investigating potential violations of state law related to the incident.

The suspect is now under investigation and has been taken into custody; authorities confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The FBI’s New Orleans Field Office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
