Fox News Blunders: Donald Trump’s Immigration Status Exposed as a Lie

Jul 26 2026

Marc Thiessen, former White House Director of Speechwriting, made a staggering on-air blunder, claiming President Donald Trump is a first-generation American, igniting a social media frenzy over Trump's actual family lineage.

During a Fox News segment, Thiessen, 59, incorrectly stated that Trump, 80, is the first child born in the U.S. after his parents immigrated. This definition is fundamentally flawed; Trump is not the first child but the fourth of Fred and Mary Anne MacLeod Trump. He is a second-generation American through his mother and a third-generation American through his father.

Thiessen proclaimed, “One thing we need to remember is that immigrants are good for our country.” He went on to assert, “Donald Trump is a first-generation American. His father came during the gold rush in Alaska. His mother was a Scottish maid.” This narrative is riddled with inaccuracies.

Viewers quickly took to social media to dismantle Thiessen's claims. One user pointed out, “A few inaccuracies here. Donald Trump’s grandfather, Friedrich Trump, made money during the gold rush, not his father.” Another chimed in, “Donald Trump is a second-generation American. Fred Trump was born in New York.” A third user expressed disbelief at the number of falsehoods presented, stating, “Good lord. How can a person say so many things they know can easily be shown to be false?”

Despite the backlash, Thiessen found some support, with one individual claiming he “highlights the broader story of immigration and upward mobility in American history.” However, this does little to mitigate the factual errors presented.

Trump's immigration policies during his second administration have been notably harsh. On July 24, Connor Read, 29, was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. This arrest occurred during a green card interview on June 3.

Read has been detained for over a month and a half in a Louisiana center, where he claims he is being treated “like a murderer.” Officers informed his partner, Jaelin Read, that he would not be returning home.

The couple met on a dating app in 2020 and subsequently applied for a green card after marrying. Read's arrest stemmed from minor offenses that led the Trump administration to label him a “criminal illegal alien.” Charges against him included possession of narcotic equipment, liquor violations, and resisting an officer.

Thiessen's erroneous claims about Trump's immigration status have sparked outrage and confusion online, revealing the complexities of Trump's family history and the ongoing debate surrounding immigration in America.
