Israeli Official Claims Death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei

Feb 28 - A senior Israeli official announced that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed during coordinated military strikes by the United States and Israel, marking a significant escalation in Middle Eastern tensions.

No immediate confirmation has emerged from Iranian authorities regarding Khamenei's reported death.

Military operations on Saturday targeted key Iranian leaders, with President Donald Trump asserting that these actions would mitigate security threats to the U.S. and potentially empower Iranians to challenge their government.

Khamenei, who ascended to the role of supreme leader in 1989 after the passing of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, wielded extensive control over Iran’s political, military, and religious spheres, significantly influencing both domestic and foreign policy.

Israel has long viewed Khamenei as a destabilizing figure in the region, particularly due to his support for militant groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah. In a previous conflict in June 2025, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz had openly threatened Khamenei’s life, stating that he “cannot continue to exist.”

The 2025 air war saw Israel execute a surprise attack on Iran’s underground nuclear facilities, resulting in the deaths of high-ranking military officials and nuclear scientists, further crippling Iran's military leadership. Khamenei's death adds to the turmoil faced by a nation already grappling with war and economic strife.

Throughout his leadership, Khamenei maintained a conservative agenda reminiscent of Khomeini’s vision, suppressing reformist movements and quelling protests that sought more liberal policies. His tenure saw Iran solidify its position as a formidable anti-U.S. force in the region.

Under Khamenei's guidance, Iran briefly improved its international standing through the 2015 nuclear agreement with world powers, but relations soured dramatically after President Trump withdrew from the deal in 2018 and reinstated sanctions.

Since the Hamas-led assault on Israel on October 7, 2023, Iran's regional allies have faced significant setbacks. Both Hamas and Hezbollah have suffered considerable losses, while Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, once a key ally of Tehran, was ousted in December 2024.

The Supreme Leader position was established following the 1979 revolution and is enshrined in Iran’s constitution, granting ultimate authority to a cleric over both the presidency and parliament. The Assembly of Experts, an 88-member clerical body aligned with Khamenei’s hardline ideology, is responsible for selecting the Supreme Leader.
