Ivanka Trump’s Billion-Dollar Island Purchase Sparks Outrage and Mockery
The Daily Show ripped into Ivanka Trump for her staggering $1.4 billion private island purchase, branding her as "out-of-touch" while Americans grapple with economic fallout.
Ivanka Trump, alongside Jared Kushner, revealed their acquisition of a 1,400-acre Mediterranean island, which she described as a "fixer-upper." This announcement comes as the nation continues to feel the strain of her father's presidency.
During a podcast appearance, Ivanka detailed their plans to develop Sazan Island into a private eco-resort. Daily Show anchor Michael Kosta played a clip from her interview, then sarcastically applauded the couple's decision.
Kosta quipped, "Let’s give it up for this couple. And for those of you who are thinking, hey, before buying a private island, shouldn’t billionaires maybe read the room? What you don’t understand is, the island doesn’t have rooms yet." He mocked the couple's plans to clear trees before laying foundations.

Ivanka recounted how she and Kushner were "captivated" by the island while swimming off a friend's boat. She described their barefoot hike to the top, claiming it left a lasting impression on them.
She stated, "Over the course of many years, we developed the opportunity to help realize its potential and transform it, but with a lot of restraint and care." Ivanka emphasized that their architectural vision aims to blend seamlessly with the natural landscape.
However, Kosta ridiculed her lofty aspirations, asking, "Can you make this sound even more out of touch?"
Ivanka referred to the purchase as a self-improvement journey, saying it represents a culmination of her real estate experience and reflections on modern living. Kosta shot back, "Of course, 'tangible manifestation!' Come on, lady. You’re rich and you bought an island! Just say that."

The couple's plans for Sazan Island have faced scrutiny since Kushner's private equity firm announced resort plans in August 2024. Albania's prime minister has supported the project.
On December 30, 2024, the Albanian government granted preliminary approval to their venture, designating Atlantic Incubation Partners LLC as a strategic investor linked to Kushner.
The government decision stated that the projected investment of 1.4 billion euros meets criteria for strategic investments and will create 1,000 jobs during development and operation.
Environmental groups have condemned the project, as Sazan was one of the last undeveloped islands in the Mediterranean. Locals now refer to it as "Ishulli i Trumpëve" or "Trump Island."

Protests erupted against Ivanka and Kushner's plans. Thousands gathered outside government offices in opposition. Activists expressed concerns over construction work continuing without transparency.
SPAK, Albania’s special anti-corruption prosecution office, has launched an investigation into changes made to the area’s protected status in 2024 that facilitated new tourism development.
Video footage circulated showing private security dragging a protester along a cliff near the construction site, inciting further demonstrations.
Activist Klajdi Belo criticized the lack of consultation regarding construction in protected areas. He stated, "The situation in Narta Lagoon is that, in practice, we have a protected area, but above all, our state has allowed construction work to continue without consultation and without transparency."
