JD Vance's Papal Name Blunder Sparks Social Media Firestorm

May 20 2026

JD Vance stepped into a social media minefield Tuesday with his take on Pope Leo XIV’s name selection, and the fallout was immediate.

During a White House briefing focused on the pope’s upcoming encyclical regarding artificial intelligence, Vance couldn’t resist pointing out the significance of Robert Francis Prevost—the first U.S.-born leader of the Roman Catholic Church—opting for the name Leo XIV.

“One of the things I always found fascinating about Pope Leo is that he chose the name Leo XIV, which of course is recollecting Leo XIII,” Vance stated, referencing the pope who held the position from 1878 to 1903 during a time of massive industrial upheaval.

“Of course, that industrial transformation, according to a lot of people, led to the rise of fascism and communism in Europe,” he continued, implying that the current pope’s choice of name might be a nod to applying Christian social teachings amid today’s technological advancements, much like the industrial revolution did back in the day.

But critics on social media were quick to pounce, pointing out the irony in Vance’s comments about social upheaval and authoritarianism, especially given the reputation of Donald Trump and his MAGA supporters.

“Didn’t make the point he thinks he made,” one user quipped.

“So, so close to getting it,” another chimed in.

A third user asked: “He doesn’t see the irony, does he?”

“Read the room JD. It’s about the rise of fascism right here,” a fourth user remarked.

“So Cardinal Prevost recognized the dangers looming on the horizon and chose a papal name to harken back to a previous pope who fought those same dangers? What an awesome pope we have!” exclaimed another critic.

The online backlash highlights how Vance’s historical references may have missed their mark, leaving many questioning whether he truly grasped the implications of his own words.

As discussions around technology and morality heat up, Vance’s comments serve as a reminder that sometimes, history can be a double-edged sword.
