JD Vance Takes on Pope Leo: Immigration Clash Ignites

Jul 01 2026

JD Vance, the Vice President, has launched a direct assault on the Vatican's immigration views, labeling them "troubling" as Pope Leo relentlessly criticizes Donald Trump's immigration policies.

During an appearance on Fox News' "The Ingraham Angle," Vance, a self-identified Catholic, voiced his discontent. "I do think that some of the things that have come out of the Vatican on the immigration question in particular have been troubling, and ultimately I disagree with it," he declared.

Vance continued, addressing Catholic leaders who oppose current immigration policies. "I'm not hostile about it. I invite them to have the conversation but I also encourage them to remember that mass migration has victims," he asserted.

Pope Leo, the first U.S. pope, has not held back in his condemnation of Trump's immigration tactics. He has demanded a "deep reflection" on how migrants are treated in the U.S., branding the Trump administration as "extremely disrespectful" and denouncing their treatment of immigrants as "inhuman."

Trump's hardline immigration strategy includes aggressive deportation efforts, which rights organizations argue infringe upon free speech and due process rights. This crackdown has fostered an environment of fear, especially among ethnic minorities concerned about racial profiling.

Despite Pope Leo's criticisms, Trump defends his policies as necessary for enhancing domestic security and combating illegal immigration.

The Vatican's disputes with Trump are not limited to immigration. Pope Leo has also taken aim at other policies, including the Iran war that erupted on February 28 with U.S. and Israeli strikes. The pope recently lauded an interim agreement between Washington and Tehran, expressing optimism for a resolution to the conflict. Furthermore, the Vatican opted out of Trump's "Board of Peace" initiative for Gaza.
