Lara Trump Faces Backlash Over 'Vacation' Vibes During China State Visit

May 16 2026

Lara Trump and her husband Eric Trump flaunted their trip to China, but not everyone is impressed.

After posting a slew of cheerful photos from the US State Visit, the daughter-in-law of former President Donald Trump found herself in hot water. The 43-year-old shared moments from her time mingling with high-profile figures, including a handshake with Chinese President Xi Jinping, captioning her post on X with, "Honored to be on such an unforgettable trip!!!!"

While Lara beamed with pride, social media users were quick to slam her for what they perceived as a vacation rather than a diplomatic mission. One user fired back, "When are you going to pay the American Taxpayers back for your expensive vacation? Most of us can’t afford to go anywhere thanks to your Daddy-in-law doing nothing to lower prices!"

Another commenter added, "Unforgettable for you, maybe. Utterly forgettable for the rest of us Americans. Complete waste of time and taxpayers' money. Your pathetic father-in-law achieved absolutely nothing."

Critics continued to pile on, questioning her presence on the trip. "Yeah, why WERE you there? You pay for your trip? How much is a ride on Air Force One?" one user demanded.

Another pointed out, "Had you been paying attention instead of taking a vacation on the taxpayer's dime, you would have noticed that Xi and the Chinese Government showed the American Hitler continuous subtle contempt during his entire failed visit."

Lara stepped in for First Lady Melania Trump, who opted to stay behind. She wasn't alone in her glamorous escapade; aide Natalie Harp, dubbed the "human printer" for her habit of bringing a portable printer everywhere, also joined the delegation. Harp turned heads in a glittering gold dress at the state banquet.

Other notable women in the entourage included ambassador Monica Crowley, Chief of Protocol Margo Martin, and principal deputy press secretary Anna Kelly, a former beauty queen filling in for Karoline Leavitt during maternity leave.

As the backlash continues to grow, it’s clear that Lara Trump’s trip to China has sparked more than just diplomatic discussions—it’s ignited a firestorm of criticism over privilege and taxpayer dollars.
