Legendary Singer Bonnie Tyler Dead at 75 After Sudden Illness

Jul 09 2026

Bonnie Tyler, the iconic Welsh singer known for her powerhouse anthem "Total Eclipse Of The Heart," has died at 75, as confirmed by a statement on her website.

Tyler passed away unexpectedly in Portugal after battling an illness, just months after undergoing emergency intestinal surgery that left her in an induced coma.

Her health had deteriorated significantly since May when she was hospitalized. Despite showing signs of recovery last month, her spokesperson warned that she remained "very unwell and in intensive care."

The statement from her family revealed, "Bonnie's family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for."

Tyler was scheduled to perform at multiple events, including the Sunshine Festival in Worcester and a concert at Cardiff’s Utilita Arena on December 17.

She shot to fame in the 1980s with "Total Eclipse Of The Heart," which dominated charts in both the UK and US. Her distinctive husky voice made her a household name.

Other hits include "Holding Out For A Hero," "It’s A Heartache," and "If You Were A Woman (And I Was A Man)." In 2013, she represented the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest with "Believe In Me," finishing in 19th place. She was honored with an MBE in 2023 for her contributions to music.

Born in Neath, South Wales, Tyler continued to create music until her death, releasing her 18th studio album, "The Best Is Yet To Come," in 2021.

Her career began with "Lost In France" in 1977, but it came with a price. After developing nodules on her vocal cords due to excessive singing, she faced surgery that required her to rest her voice completely for six weeks.

This demand proved impossible. After a moment of frustration, she returned to find that her voice had changed permanently. The gravelly rasp that emerged became her signature sound.

Six years later, this new voice found its perfect match in "Total Eclipse Of The Heart," a dramatic power ballad written by Jim Steinman, who initially doubted its commercial viability.

Steinman described it as an "aria" and a "Wagnerian-like onslaught of sound and emotion," crafted specifically to showcase Tyler's powerful vocals.

He also wrote and produced her follow-up hit, "Holding Out For A Hero," which gained further fame through its inclusion in the movie "Footloose." Despite continued touring and recording, chart success became elusive after those early hits.
