Lindsey Graham's Shocking Death: Aorta Rupture Claims Influential Senator

Jul 13 2026

Senator Lindsey Graham, 71, succumbed to a ruptured aorta due to hardening of the arteries, a catastrophic medical emergency that struck just days after he joked about being targeted by Iranians.

The District of Columbia’s Medical Examiner confirmed complications from arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease as the cause of death. His office announced the news early Sunday.

Graham had recently returned from Ukraine, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelensky. Just five days before his death, emergency dispatch audio revealed paramedics were called to his Washington home around 8:30 p.m. Saturday for a cardiac arrest.

In a July 6 post on X, Graham shared an image of a man in Tehran with a bullseye over his face, captioned: “SOONER OR LATER YOUR HEADS WILL ROLL.” He quipped, “At least they used a good photo of me. Judge me by my enemies.”

President Donald Trump led tributes to his late ally, expressing shock over the senator's sudden passing. Trump stated that Graham was “great” and “unique in every way.”

Former first lady Jill Biden also expressed her condolences, recalling their decade-long service together in Congress and their travels as members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Marjorie Taylor Greene offered minimal memorials, instead sharing a post from U.S. Central Command about ongoing attacks on Iran, suggesting Graham would approve. “Lindsey Graham would be proud,” she wrote. “RIP.”

Hunter Biden reflected on Graham’s past remarks about his father, stating he would remember the senator from a time before Donald Trump’s presidency. He quoted Graham praising Joe Biden as “the nicest person I’ve ever met in politics.”

Nikki Haley’s office confirmed she will not seek Graham’s now-vacant Senate seat. Haley expressed shock and sadness over his death and stated she would keep his family in her prayers.

Trump reiterated the GOP's loss in an interview, emphasizing how difficult it is to lose someone like Graham.

Graham’s office announced his death shortly after 2 a.m. on Sunday morning. Former GOP Rep. Adam Kinzinger shared memories of their friendship before Trump’s rise, recalling their travels and experiences that highlighted the importance of public service.

Kinzinger noted their paths diverged after Trump but chose to remember the man who cared deeply about America’s role in the world. “Rest in peace, Lindsey. My prayers are with his family and all who loved him,” he added.

Trump posted another tribute on Truth Social, sharing a photo of Graham wearing a “Make Iran Great Again” cap and holding a mock-up of Trump’s Wikipedia page that referred to him as the “Acting President of Venezuela.”

“So sad!!!” Trump commented on the image.
