Man Arrested in Scheme to Firebomb Palestinian Activist's Residence Following Undercover Investigation

Police apprehended Alexander Heifler, 26, on Thursday at his Hoboken, New Jersey residence, where he was reportedly assembling Molotov cocktails intended for a firebombing attack on Nerdeen Kiswani, a well-known Palestinian activist. This arrest followed an extensive undercover operation by the New York City Police Department.

Kiswani, 31, who leads protests against Israel and advocates for Palestinian rights through her organization, Within Our Lifetime, was informed by law enforcement late Thursday that they had thwarted a serious threat to her life. "I feel very blessed that they were able to thwart this," she stated, emphasizing that such threats are a constant reality for those who advocate for Palestine.

Heifler, identified as a member of the JDL 613 Brotherhood—a group that claims to combat rising antisemitism—was arrested while preparing incendiary devices. According to police sources, he had been in communication with an undercover detective who infiltrated a group chat where the plot was discussed.

Details from the investigation reveal that Heifler had plans to flee to Israel after executing the attack. The JDL 613 Brotherhood's website draws inspiration from the original Jewish Defense League, notorious for its violent history against Arab American activists in previous decades.

In a criminal complaint, Heifler faces multiple charges related to the creation and possession of destructive devices, each carrying a potential sentence of up to ten years. His initial court appearance occurred on Friday afternoon in New Jersey.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned the incident, stating, "Let me be clear: We will not tolerate violent extremism in our city." He expressed relief over Kiswani's safety and reiterated that no individual should face violence due to their political beliefs.

Evidence presented in court included a video call where Heifler discussed his desire for "self-defense" training and his intention to use Molotov cocktails against Kiswani. The undercover detective accompanied Heifler on a reconnaissance mission to her residence, where they plotted the attack.

On March 4, they conducted surveillance of Kiswani's home and discussed creating multiple Molotov cocktails to target her property and vehicles parked nearby. The operation culminated in the recovery of eight assembled Molotov cocktails during a search warrant execution at Heifler's home.

Kiswani co-founded Within Our Lifetime, which regularly organizes large protests against Israeli policies. The group’s calls for the abolition of Zionism and support for various forms of struggle have drawn significant criticism. Kiswani firmly denies any allegations of antisemitism stemming from her activism.

She has faced considerable online hostility, including derogatory remarks from public officials. Earlier this year, U.S. Rep. Randy Fine faced backlash for a controversial social media post that appeared to demean Muslims in response to Kiswani's light-hearted comment about dog ownership.

"That hate against Palestinians has been bolstered by public officials, by Zionist organizations, who are never held accountable," Kiswani remarked. "This is the inevitable result of that."

The NYPD's Racially and Ethnically Motivated Extremism unit conducted the operation, highlighting their commitment to early detection and prevention of potential violence. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated, "This is exactly how our intelligence and counterterrorism operation is designed to work."
