Matt Damon Ripped Apart After Daughter Schools Him on Homophobic Slur

Matt Damon, the 55-year-old actor, has been under fire after admitting his daughter schooled him on the dangers of a homophobic slur. This revelation came during a promotional event for his upcoming film, The Odyssey, where he plays Odysseus, King of Ithaca.

At the London premiere of The Odyssey, Damon was accompanied by his wife, Luciana Barroso Damon, and their four daughters: Alexia, Isabella, Gia, and Stella. He expressed emotional pride in sharing the moment with his family, stating, "Everybody’s so grown-up. Like, I got a real dad teary moment seeing them today."

In a 2021 interview with The Sunday Times, Damon revealed that one of his daughters confronted him about using the f-slur, a derogatory term aimed primarily at gay men. He did not specify which daughter it was but described how she left the table after he made a joke involving the term.

He recounted her response: "She went to her room and wrote a very long, beautiful treatise on how that word is dangerous." Damon acknowledged her argument and declared, "I retire the f-slur! I understood."

The f-slur has been used historically in a casual context, but its implications have evolved significantly. Damon noted that he grew up hearing it used frequently and even included it in dialogue in his film Stuck on You.

Critics slammed Damon for learning this lesson too late, questioning why he needed a personal experience to understand the impact of such language. The backlash intensified as many felt his admission was tone-deaf.

In response to the criticism, Damon clarified his comments in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. He explained that he was trying to contextualize the progress made regarding language and attitudes toward the LGBTQ+ community since his childhood in Boston.

Damon elaborated that he explained to his daughter how the slur was "used constantly and casually" during his upbringing. He expressed admiration for her articulate understanding of the pain such words can inflict on individuals within the LGBTQ+ community.

He emphasized that he has never used the f-slur in his personal life and that the conversation with his daughter was not a "personal awakening." Damon stated, "I do not use slurs of any kind," reinforcing his commitment to social justice.

He acknowledged that his remarks might have led some to assume the worst about him, especially given the ongoing hostility against the LGBTQ+ community. He concluded with a firm stance: "To be as clear as I can be, I stand with the LGBTQ+ community."
