Mayor Mamdani's Anti-Israel Rhetoric Sparks Outrage from Jewish Groups
Mayor Zohran Mamdani is under fire from Jewish groups for his incendiary remarks against Israel and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which they describe as a “televised political spectacle.”
In a social media video, Mamdani acknowledged he lacks the power to arrest Netanyahu during his upcoming New York visit but still labeled the Israeli leader a “war criminal” who is “not welcome” in the city.
Rabbi Chaim Steinmetz of Congregation Kehilath Jeshurun stated, “He is smart enough to know this rhetoric will incite riots when Netanyahu visits. Those riots could easily spread to attacks on Jewish institutions. And they will be Mamdani’s fault.”

Steinmetz condemned Mamdani as a demagogue for declaring that Netanyahu is unwelcome in New York.
The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu in November 2024, citing alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the conflict in Gaza.
The Simon Wiesenthal Center criticized Mamdani’s actions, calling it a “profound misuse of the office entrusted to him by all New Yorkers.”
They pointed out that after recognizing New York City’s lack of legal authority to enforce the ICC’s warrant, the mayor chose to turn that reality into a political spectacle, failing to mention Hamas or the October 7 attacks that provoked Israel’s military response.
The group accused Mamdani of consistently targeting Israel while using his position to legitimize divisive rhetoric that isolates the Jewish state and exacerbates domestic tensions.
They urged him to concentrate on issues affecting New Yorkers, including Jewish residents, instead of acting as a spokesperson for an international anti-Israel agenda.

“At a time when Jewish New Yorkers are experiencing alarming levels of antisemitism, harassment, and intimidation, they deserve a mayor who refrains from fomenting hatred against the world’s only Jewish country while maintaining the fiction that this is not anti-Jewish,” the statement read.
“New Yorkers elected a mayor, not a prosecutor of foreign leaders. Mayor Mamdani should spend less time trying to demonize only one leader and one country from City Hall and more time protecting the New Yorkers he was elected to serve,” it concluded.
In an attempt at damage control, Mamdani told reporters he would pursue international warrants against others, not just Netanyahu.

“What so many are looking for is a sense that there is, in fact, a rule of law across the world where there are crimes that are so grave that they offend all humanity,” he stated.
However, he continued to single out Israel, which has drawn ire from Jewish leaders in New York.
The Israeli consulate criticized Mamdani’s focus on demonizing the Jewish state as reckless and dangerous.
“This is another example of this antisemitic record and hostility towards Israel, and it disgraces the office he holds,” the statement asserted.
