Migrant Murder Suspect Slips Away After Passport Return — Experts Doubt Charges

Jul 10 2026

The suspect in the murder of New York mom Jamey Carney vanished after Irish authorities returned his passport while he sought asylum, igniting fears that he may evade charges entirely. Ahmad Alsaqer, 28, is believed to have boarded a flight to Turkey with his passport just hours after Carney's lifeless body was discovered.

Carney's daughter found her mother’s battered body under a duvet in their rented home in Killarney. This gruesome discovery came shortly after Alsaqer had been granted subsidiary protection, allowing him to reclaim his passport despite being an asylum seeker.

Alsaqer had surrendered his passport to the International Protection Office during his asylum application process, a standard procedure for all applicants. However, the return of his passport enabled him to flee the country before investigators could act.

Carney, 43, had relocated from Westchester County, N.Y., to Ireland in 2021. She suffered multiple severe head wounds and was initially thought to have died from a violent attack by Alsaqer. However, officials later confirmed that suffocation was the cause of death.

Investigators face significant challenges in charging Alsaqer due to the presence of his DNA at the crime scene. Sources indicated that Alsaqer frequently stayed at Carney's home, leaving behind DNA evidence that complicates the case against him.

“If he were an intruder, it would be different; he might struggle to explain his DNA in that scenario,” a source stated, highlighting the difficulties law enforcement faces.

Carney worked for a healthcare consulting company and met Alsaqer at a pro-Palestinian rally a year and a half prior to her death. In the weeks leading up to her murder, the couple shared photos on social media.

Witnesses reported hearing a loud argument emanating from Carney’s home on the Monday before her body was found. Alsaqer allegedly took an express bus to Dublin airport around 3 a.m. Tuesday, just after the argument but before the discovery of Carney's body.

He boarded a flight to Turkey shortly after 10:50 a.m., giving him approximately a 12-hour head start before authorities could locate Carney’s remains.

Law enforcement is investigating Alsaqer’s connections across the Middle East, including Turkey, Syria, and Jordan, suspecting that these contacts are aiding his escape. Alsaqer arrived in Ireland in 2024.

Reports suggest that Carney may have been killed during a fit of jealousy or rage.
