Obama Calls for Nonviolence After WHCD Shooting, Highlights Secret Service Heroism

Apr 28 2026

On Sunday, Barack Obama addressed the nation, urging Americans to embrace peace rather than violence in the face of turmoil, particularly following the alarming shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. His remarks came as he expressed gratitude towards Secret Service agents for their swift response during the crisis.

The chaos unfolded Saturday night at the Washington Hilton when a man entered the venue and opened fire. A Secret Service agent sustained a hit to his bulletproof vest but is reported to be recovering well. The rapid response of law enforcement ensured the safety of President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other officials present at the event.

“It’s incumbent upon all of us to reject the idea that violence has any place in our democracy,” Obama stated. “This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the courage and sacrifice that U.S. Secret Service agents demonstrate daily. I’m thankful for their service and relieved that the agent who was shot is expected to be okay.”

Criticism arose from some conservative circles regarding Obama’s comments, particularly his assertion that no details were available about the shooter’s motives at that time.

In the aftermath, reports surfaced detailing messages allegedly penned by the shooter, who expressed hostility towards the Trump administration and referred to himself as a “Friendly Federal Assassin.”

Obama’s sentiments echoed those he shared after a separate assassination attempt in 2024, where a shooter grazed Trump’s ear during a campaign event in Butler, Pennsylvania. “There is absolutely no place for political violence in our democracy,” he remarked then. “While we don’t yet know all the facts, we should be grateful that former President Trump wasn’t seriously injured and take this opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to civility and respect in political discourse. Michelle and I wish him a swift recovery.”
