Trump Attributes Political Violence to Democrats' 'Dangerous Hate Speech'

Apr 28 2026

In a pointed accusation, President Trump has labeled the Democrats' rhetoric as “very dangerous hate speech” in the wake of a shooting incident at the White House Correspondents' Dinner.

The shooting, which occurred Saturday near the Washington Hilton's main security screening area, adds to a troubling trend of political violence, including an assassination attempt on Trump himself in Pennsylvania last July and another incident in Florida that year.

During an interview on Sunday night’s episode of 60 Minutes, Trump was pressed on what actions a president could take to alter the course of escalating political violence in the nation. “You know, you go back 20 years, 40 years, 100 years, 200 years, 500 years, it’s always been there,” he reflected. “People are assassinated. People are injured.”

“People are hurt. And I'm not sure that it's any more now than there was,” he continued, asserting that the Democrats’ hate speech poses a greater threat. “I do think that the hate speech of the Democrats much more so is very dangerous.”

Trump emphasized, “I really think it's very dangerous for the country.”

As the chaos unfolded at the dinner, Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Cabinet members were swiftly evacuated by Secret Service agents from the ballroom.

U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche confirmed to NBC News that senior officials, including the president, were likely intended targets of the attack.

Notably present at the event were Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his sister Kerry Kennedy, whose family has a tragic history with political violence; their father and uncle were both assassinated.

CBS correspondent Norah O’Donnell highlighted that Erika Kirk, widow of the slain Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, was also in attendance. Following Kirk’s murder last year, experts have warned that political violence in America is at its highest level since the late 1960s.

Recent violent incidents include an attack on Minnesota Democrat Melissa Hortman and her husband at their home in Brooklyn Park in 2025, which followed an assault on state Senator John Hoffman and his wife earlier that same day.

In response to the shooting at the correspondents’ dinner, several prominent Democrats took to social media to express their relief regarding the safety of those present. “Political violence is absolutely unacceptable,” stated New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. “I am glad the President and guests at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner are safe.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom echoed this sentiment: “Relieved everyone at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner is safe tonight based on initial reports.”

Authorities have arrested suspect Cole Tomas Allen in connection with the incident and he is scheduled to appear in court on Monday. Allen faces multiple charges, including using a firearm during a violent crime and assaulting a federal officer with a deadly weapon.
