Ongoing Inquiry Into Dianna Russini and Mike Vrabel: Editor Acknowledges Errors

Apr 30 2026

The Athletic convened its staff for an unprecedented all-hands meeting to discuss the unfolding situation surrounding former employee Dianna Russini and New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel.

On April 29, executive editor Steven Ginsberg led the meeting, where he reportedly stated that “communications could have been more clear,” according to sources familiar with the event.

Ginsberg’s remarks, delivered from a prepared statement lasting around ten minutes, did not include a question-and-answer segment, leaving many staff members without the opportunity to voice their concerns.

The investigation into Russini, who is 43 years old, remains active and is anticipated to be extensive.

In the wake of the initial controversy, Us Weekly reached out to The Athletic for further clarification.

Initially, The Athletic stood firmly behind Russini after Page Six published photos of her with Vrabel on April 7. Ginsberg described the images as “misleading and lacking essential context,” emphasizing that they depicted public interactions among many individuals. He praised Russini as a leading journalist in NFL coverage.

In response to the photos, Russini stated, “The photos don’t represent the group of six people who were hanging out during the day. Like most journalists in the NFL, reporters interact with sources away from stadiums and other venues.”

The investigation was launched on April 11, citing editorial guidelines that mandate journalists avoid conflicts of interest or any appearance thereof to maintain credibility.

Russini resigned from her position on April 14 without admitting any wrongdoing. In a statement shared via social media, she asserted, “I have covered the NFL with professionalism and dedication throughout my career, and I stand behind every story I have ever published.”

She expressed gratitude for The Athletic’s initial support but lamented the ensuing media speculation that she felt was detached from reality. “This media frenzy is hurtling forward without regard for the review process The Athletic is trying to complete,” she added, criticizing the leaks that have fueled public scrutiny.

Since the release of the initial photos, additional images have surfaced, further complicating the narrative surrounding Russini and Vrabel, both of whom are married. On April 23, Page Six published photographs showing them appearing to kiss at a New York City bar in March 2020, during a time when Russini was engaged to her now-husband, Kevin Goldschmidt. Vrabel has been married to his wife, Jen Vrabel, since 1999.

The situation continues to evolve as more details emerge.
