Over 50 Former Staff Demand Eric Swalwell's Exit from Congress Following Campaign Suspension
Rep. Eric Swalwell announced the suspension of his California gubernatorial campaign on Sunday, a decision that followed a surge of sexual assault and misconduct allegations that have shaken the Democratic Party. The abrupt halt raises questions about his future in Congress, especially as over 50 former staffers have publicly called for his resignation.
In a statement shared on X, Swalwell expressed, "I am suspending my campaign for Governor," while also acknowledging "mistakes in judgment" from his past and vowing to contest what he labeled as "serious, false allegations."
This decision came just two days after a woman, who had previously worked in Swalwell's district office, publicly accused him of sexually assaulting her on two occasions—once in 2019 and again in 2024—claiming she was too intoxicated to consent during both incidents. Reports indicate that the authenticity of her claims has not been independently verified.
Multiple women have come forward with separate allegations against Swalwell, according to reports. Four women have shared their experiences with CNN, each detailing instances of alleged sexual misconduct.
The situation has escalated into the criminal justice realm, with the Manhattan District Attorney's Office confirming an investigation into the alleged incident from 2024, which reportedly occurred in New York. This development significantly heightened the stakes for Swalwell, who initially sought to continue his campaign while denying the allegations before ultimately suspending it.
Swalwell has vehemently denied the accusations, labeling them as "flat false" and "absolutely false." However, his statements have hinted at personal conduct issues that could complicate his defense among political allies. In both his Friday and Sunday addresses, he apologized to his wife and referenced "mistakes in judgment," yet did not clarify what those mistakes entailed.
The political ramifications were swift and severe. Democratic allies, labor unions, and fellow candidates quickly distanced themselves from Swalwell following the emergence of the allegations. Notable figures such as Adam Schiff and Jimmy Gomez withdrew their support, while House Democratic leaders and other officials called for an investigation and urged him to exit the gubernatorial race. Reports indicate that Reps. Pramila Jayapal, Ro Khanna, and Eugene Vindman have also suggested that Swalwell should resign from Congress.
The pressure mounted further as more than 50 former staffers signed an open letter demanding his resignation from Congress alongside the cessation of his gubernatorial campaign, labeling the allegations as serious and credible. Some lawmakers have even indicated they would back efforts to expel him from the House if he does not resign voluntarily.
Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna is preparing to initiate that process; however, any expulsion would necessitate a two-thirds vote in the House.
Additionally, another federal issue looms over Swalwell. Late Sunday, the Department of Homeland Security confirmed it is investigating allegations regarding the employment of a Brazilian nanny by Swalwell. This matter is distinct from the sexual assault allegations but adds to the mounting legal and political challenges facing the congressman.
The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has been gathering information related to claims that Swalwell employed a Brazilian national as a nanny without proper work authorization. This situation has been referred to DHS law enforcement for further investigation.
Despite suspending his campaign, Swalwell's name is likely to remain on the ballot. Reports indicate that the deadline for removing his name from the primary ballot has already passed, meaning voters may still see him listed even though he has ceased active campaigning. The California primary is scheduled for June 2, with the state's top-two system allowing the two highest vote-getters to advance to the general election regardless of party affiliation.
For now, while Swalwell has exited the governor's race, he remains embroiled in controversy. The investigations, calls for resignation, and uncertainty regarding his congressional future are intensifying.
