Pentagon Seeks White House Green Light for $200 Billion Iran War Funding
The Pentagon has formally requested the White House's approval for a staggering funding proposal exceeding $200 billion aimed at bolstering military operations in Iran. This comes as U.S. and Israeli forces have intensified their strikes against Iranian targets, a campaign that began nearly three weeks ago.
According to military sources, the objective is to dismantle what they describe as the Iranian regime’s security apparatus. President Trump has asserted that Iran represents an “imminent” threat to American safety, citing its nuclear ambitions and missile development as primary concerns. However, the financial burden of this military engagement will ultimately fall on American taxpayers.
Reports indicate that Pentagon officials are advocating for this significant increase in defense spending to sustain their ongoing military efforts. A senior official from the Trump administration disclosed this information, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
As of now, U.S. Central Command has reported over 7,800 targets struck, more than 8,000 combat flights conducted, and upwards of 120 Iranian vessels either damaged or destroyed during the conflict. The Defense Department has been exploring various funding options over the past two weeks, but uncertainty looms regarding which proposal will be presented to Congress.
Some officials within the Trump administration express skepticism about the likelihood of the $200 billion request passing through Congress. It is anticipated that at least 60 votes in the Senate would be necessary to overcome a filibuster.
Senator Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat from Connecticut and member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, has already voiced his opposition to the funding request. He remarked, “I think its chances of passing Congress are slim, maybe slim to none. The reason is very simply — it could be misinterpreted as approval of the war.”
Blumenthal further emphasized the need for transparency, suggesting that administration officials should testify before Congress under oath to clarify the war's objectives and strategy, which he described as currently “confused and chaotic.”
In a private meeting, Pentagon officials previously estimated that the initial six days of military operations in Iran incurred costs exceeding $11.3 billion. Meanwhile, Congress has already allocated $838.5 billion for defense funding for the fiscal year 2026.
A recent poll conducted by The Economist/YouGov revealed that 56 percent of Americans disapprove of President Trump’s handling of the situation in Iran, while only 36 percent approve. Notably, 92 percent of Democrats disapprove of the military actions taken, whereas 81 percent of Republicans support them. Among independents, a significant 63 percent express disapproval of U.S. strikes in Iran.
