Politicians Clash Over Immigration Policy Following Loyola Student's Tragic Death

CHICAGO — A tragic incident involving a Venezuelan migrant accused of fatally shooting a Loyola student has sparked intense political backlash. Sheridan Gorman was killed on a Lake Michigan pier last week, prompting a wave of criticism directed at local leaders.

Republicans, led by gubernatorial candidate Darren Bailey, are targeting Governor J.B. Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, blaming their “sanctuary city” policies for creating an environment that allegedly contributed to this violence. In response, Democrats argue that the roots of the issue extend beyond state borders, pointing to national immigration failures.

“While I agree there have been real failures, those failures of course extend beyond the borders of Illinois. They’re national failures,” Pritzker stated, emphasizing the need for comprehensive immigration reform and criticizing the federal government for not addressing these issues effectively.

Bailey contends that Pritzker’s support for sanctuary policies, which limit local law enforcement's cooperation with federal immigration authorities, compromises public safety. “As Illinois governor, he can be keeping our state safe through the very mechanisms at his fingertips. Letting violent criminals in this state, there is no excuse for that,” he asserted.

Pritzker acknowledged that improvements are necessary but maintained that immigration enforcement should primarily be a federal responsibility. “It is the job of the federal government to go after immigration enforcement,” he remarked.

In light of the incident, Bailey is advocating for the repeal of the TRUST Act, Illinois’ sanctuary law, as well as the SAFE-T Act, which replaced cash bail with pretrial detention hearings. “J.B. Pritzker needs to focus and allow state and local law enforcement to do their job and find these violent criminals and get them out,” he insisted.

Despite Chicago police data indicating that homicides are at a 60-year low, Bailey and other Republicans dispute these figures. They have also criticized Johnson’s recent decision to dismiss Garien Gatewood, his deputy mayor for community safety. In response to inquiries about the firing, Johnson reaffirmed his commitment to community safety: “Community safety is still my top priority, and my focus is going to be doubling down on the efforts that have proven to be strong strategies.”
