Rep. Pramila Jayapal Demands Compensation for Families Affected by ICE Actions

Mar 28 2026

Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) urged federal reparations on Friday for children and families impacted by the actions of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), citing the emotional scars left by the aggressive enforcement of immigration policies during the Trump administration.

During a congressional hearing titled “Kidnapped and Disappeared: Trump’s Attack on Children,” Jayapal highlighted the urgent need for reforms to protect vulnerable populations from further harm inflicted by federal agents.

“We also need to pursue prosecutions,” she emphasized, advocating for accountability. “Those responsible for this harm must face justice.”

Jayapal elaborated, “We must hold them accountable for the trauma they have caused, and we will need to establish some form of reparations for the children and families affected by these actions.”

Since taking office, Trump initiated widespread deportations, deploying ICE agents across the nation. Tragically, two U.S. citizens were killed in encounters with federal immigration officers in Minnesota earlier this year.

The number of children detained has surged alarmingly, with over 3,800 minors arrested between January and October 2025, according to data from the Immigrants’ Rights Clinic at Columbia Law School and an analysis by The Guardian.

Among these children, 1,700 are held in facilities like the Dilley Immigration Processing Center in Texas, which has been described as operating under dire conditions. This includes young children such as 5-year-old Liam Ramos and two sets of 5-year-old twins, along with a 2-month-old infant.

Jayapal called for the closure of these for-profit immigration detention centers, stating, “The scale of abuse is staggering.”

She continued, “We must connect the dots for the nation regarding how these violations persist at every level. The profiteering must be exposed.”

As a former chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, she insisted that private prisons for immigrants should be outlawed, arguing they exist solely for corporate profit that ultimately supports harmful policies.

Jayapal's comments drew criticism from various quarters, including Fox News, where contributor Sara Carter contended that reparations should only be extended to legal U.S. citizens, suggesting that the Democratic Party should bear the financial responsibility for what she termed “atrocities” committed in support of immigrant rights.
