Robert Smith Unleashes Fury on FIFA's Absurd World Cup Halftime Show
Robert Smith unleashes a tirade against FIFA's ludicrous decision to introduce a halftime show for the World Cup final.
As the World Cup final approaches, Smith takes to social media to express his outrage. "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH... #Breadandcircuses #MUGWANK #pleasejustfuckoff," he rages on The Cure's Instagram account.

This halftime spectacle in New Jersey, orchestrated by Coldplay's Chris Martin, boasts a lineup of big names: Madonna, Justin Bieber, Shakira, and BTS. FIFA president Gianni Infantino hails it as a "groundbreaking spectacle" meant to celebrate "football, music and our shared values," claiming it will create a legacy beyond the final whistle. Meanwhile, the NYC/NJ area grapples with air quality issues.
Hours after his initial outburst, Smith clarifies his stance. His ire isn't directed at the artists but at the very notion of a halftime show during the World Cup final.

"IT IS ABOUT THE #MUGWANK I D E A OF A FOOTBALL WORLD CUP FINAL HALF TIME SHOW... IF YOU NOW UNDERSTAND MY 'AAAAAAAGH!' A BIT BETTER, BUT STILL DON'T AGREE, PLEASE ADJUST YOUR RED CAP, YOUR 'I love JANNY + DONNY + $$$' TSHIRT AND... KNOCK YOURSELF OUT? ONWARDS," he posts. His comments ignite a flurry of support online, with many fans rallying behind him.
One fan exclaims, "Robert, if you see this by any chance, THANK YOU! ! ! YOU GIVE ME REASON TO STAY ALIVE." Another chimes in, "I love Robert's comment at the bottom. I wholeheartedly agree." A third adds, "Couldn't have put that better myself..."
Another supporter notes, "Robert is allergic to corporate-speak and corporate bollocks, particularly when it comes to organizations like FIFA. It’s not about these artists, specifically, as I see it."

"Hahaha, I love you, Robert! Always spot on, always voicing common sense," another fan affirms. A final supporter states, "Love you, Robert. Great to see you saying what needs to be said."
Beyond Smith's critique of the concept itself, practical concerns about the halftime show arise.

The performance could stretch up to 25 minutes. However, tournament regulations dictate that halftime breaks cannot exceed 15 minutes.
Producers later confirm that the combined musical segment will be limited to 11 minutes.
The show will also feature a classical element, with conductor Gustavo Dudamel leading members of the New York Philharmonic and the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela in a tribute to those affected by recent earthquakes in the area.
