Rory McIlroy Reflects on the Challenges of Marriage in Heartfelt 2026 Masters Acceptance Speech
Rory McIlroy, fresh off his 2026 Masters victory, delivered a heartfelt acceptance speech on April 12, acknowledging the unwavering support of his family. “First and foremost, my wife and daughter, Erica [Stoll] and Poppy,” he began, expressing gratitude while candidly admitting, “They have to put up with me at home, and trust me, sometimes that’s a tough thing to do.”
Since their relationship began in 2015, McIlroy and Stoll have navigated the ups and downs of life together, marrying in 2017 and welcoming their daughter Poppy in September 2020. “They have been my biggest supporters,” he continued, noting how the Masters week has become a highlight for Poppy, possibly due to the Par 3 Tournament or the all-you-can-eat ice cream available for players.

His victory came after a fierce competition against Scottie Scheffler, marking McIlroy as the first back-to-back champion since Tiger Woods in 2001 and 2002. The emotional weight of the moment was palpable as he reflected on his family’s role in his success.
Before the tournament commenced, Stoll and Poppy took on caddying duties during the Par 3 Tournament, showcasing their support publicly. This display followed a tumultuous period in their marriage, where rumors of divorce circulated less than two years prior. However, reconciliation was achieved, with McIlroy stating in June 2024 that they recognized their best future was as a united family.
As the 2026 Masters approached, speculation about their marriage resurfaced, fueled by revelations in a biography titled *Rory: The Heartache and Triumph of Golf’s Most Human Superstar*. Released on April 7, the book by Alan Shipnuck suggested that “rumors about McIlroy’s love life” were not entirely unexpected given his past. Shipnuck noted that Stoll’s reclusive nature contributed to her public persona resembling that of Elin Woods.
The biography also recounted how McIlroy and Stoll’s flirtation began while he was still dating tennis star Caroline Wozniacki. A former PGA Tour employee remarked, “He was throwing every ounce of game he had at Erica. It was not subtle.”

Neither McIlroy nor Wozniacki has publicly addressed any potential overlap in their relationships. A source close to Wozniacki stated in April 2025 that she has moved on with her life, now happily married with children.
In the same biography, pro golfer Paul McGinley shared insights into the challenges faced by McIlroy’s wife. “It can’t be easy being Rory’s wife,” McGinley wrote. “I’m sure it’s not easy for her because she’s quiet by nature. She kind of keeps her thoughts to herself. She’s had to find where she fits in and where she doesn’t.”
