Rosanne Cash's Five Offspring: The Legacy of a Country Queen

Rosanne Cash, the iconic daughter of Johnny Cash and a four-time Grammy winner, wears many hats, but none more cherished than that of a mother to her five kids: Hannah, Caitlin, Chelsea, Carrie, and Jakob.

“I would not be who I am without them,” she declared in a candid 2010 chat with A.M. Homes. “Becoming a mother changed me fundamentally.”

In 1979, Rosanne tied the knot with musician Rodney Crowell, stepping into the role of a stepmother to his daughter Hannah. Their union produced three daughters before their split in 1992: Caitlin, Chelsea, and Carrie. Post-divorce, Rosanne relocated from Nashville to New York with her girls, a move she described as pivotal for her artistry but tumultuous for her parenting.

“I don’t think I was a great parent during that time. I have regrets about my distractions and being consumed with my own upheaval,” she confessed in a December 2023 podcast interview. “My saving grace is that I couldn’t have loved them more. And that I tried hard.”

Rosanne found love again with producer John Leventhal, marrying him in 1995 and welcoming their son Jakob four years later. Here’s the lowdown on Rosanne Cash’s five dynamic children: Hannah, Caitlin, Chelsea, Carrie, and Jakob.

Rosanne became a mother for the first time after marrying Rodney Crowell in 1979. He had a 3-year-old daughter from a previous relationship, and Rosanne embraced the challenge of raising her.

Hannah was born on May 6, 1976, to Rodney and his first wife, Martha Dant Watts. Despite the divorce when Hannah was a teen, Rosanne has always claimed her as her own. Their bond remains strong; in May 2020, Hannah posted a heartfelt tribute on Instagram for Mother’s Day.

“Happy Mother’s Day to my mom. She is beyond generous, my style icon and has always modeled how imperative hard work is to one’s soul,” she wrote alongside a vintage photo of Rosanne. “She is ... the person I will forever turn to when my own children have me questioning my ability to press on in this wild world of mothering.”

But it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. In her memoir Composed, Rosanne revealed their relationship had its “fraught” moments. “I had taken on the job of mothering her at the age of twenty-two, long before I outgrew a need for mothering myself,” she reflected. “I was unprepared and unequipped.”

Yet she praised Hannah for her patience and acceptance. “Hannah has turned out to be a wondrous and humbling gift in my life,” Rosanne wrote. Now a mom herself with two daughters and a stepdaughter, Hannah thrives as an interior designer in Nashville.

Hannah runs her own firm, the Hannah Crowell Design Studio, which has expanded into landscaping and art curation.

Rosanne and Rodney welcomed their first child together, Caitlin Rivers, on January 24, 1980. Rosanne chose the middle name Rivers to honor her grandmother. Caitlin grew up as a bit of a daredevil; Rosanne described her as leading an “untamed kind of life.” After high school in New York, Caitlin moved to Los Angeles to dive into the music industry.

“I worried about her a lot—she seemed to always live on the edge,” Rosanne admitted. Caitlin married photographer Sam Esty Rayner in 2009, who happens to be Morrissey’s nephew.

“With marriage Caitlin has become a fuller version of who she has always been—a tattooed surfer who is rambunctious and unpredictable,” Rosanne noted.

Next came Chelsea Jane on January 25, 1982. Born in Nashville but raised in New York post-divorce, Chelsea developed a passion for horseback riding and later pursued photography and music at Memphis College of Art.

In 2009, she released her debut album and has performed alongside her mother multiple times. “As much as my dad’s legacy is something I cherish, it’s a burden with a lot of moving parts,” Rosanne shared.

Chelsea echoed this sentiment in a 2013 interview: “Once I had my own records, I began to feel a little bit more confident.” Like her mother, Chelsea is also an accomplished writer for various publications.

Chelsea married musician Terry Kane in July 2015 and welcomed their daughter Evie Crowell Cash Kane in August 2022. Rosanne couldn’t contain her joy on Instagram: “I’m in love. A million times over.”

The youngest daughter Carrie Kathleen was born in 1988. Named after Rosanne’s grandmother and sister Kathy Cash, Carrie arrived during a tumultuous time for the family.

“She was a precious tonic in our lives,” Rosanne wrote about Carrie. Eighteen months later, Rosanne and Rodney divorced. Carrie shares many traits with her older sisters but is described as more domestic.

“She’s really inherited a lot of my mother’s characteristics,” Rosanne told NPR in 2010. Carrie is also creative; she previously hosted an online cooking show and opened Crowell Floral in Nashville.

On May 31, 2014, Carrie married record producer Dan Knobler, who surprised her with an original composition for their wedding processional. They welcomed two children: Willoughby in June 2018 and Olive in November 2020.

Finally, Rosanne and John welcomed their only son Jakob “Jake” William on January 22, 1999. “I thought I knew just about everything there was to know about parenting after twenty-plus years of motherhood,” she wrote in Composed.

Jake graduated from The University of Chicago in 2021 with a degree in philosophy. He celebrated his achievement with his proud parents on Instagram.

Jake is carving his own path as a musician. He expressed his desire for success to be his own: “At the end of the day, it is important to me that whatever success I get from music has nothing to do with my parents.”

In 2018, he released his debut album Oh, So Bittersweet! followed by an EP titled Greenwich Village Ghosts two years later.
