Samuel L. Jackson Slammed as 'Ignorant' for Racism Rant Against Argentina

Jul 21 2026

Samuel L. Jackson, the Hollywood heavyweight, stirred the pot with a reckless Instagram post that has drawn fire from former Argentine legislator Rebeca Fleitas. The actor's incendiary remarks came after Argentina's loss to Spain in the 2026 World Cup.

On July 19, Jackson shared a message from the SEC Black Alumni Network, urging Black individuals to boycott support for Argentina in the FIFA World Cup. The post claimed Argentina is "historically one of, if not the most racist, countries in the world." This assertion quickly went viral, sparking a mix of support and outrage.

Fleitas, who served in the Buenos Aires City Legislature from 2021 to 2025, did not hold back in her response on X. She labeled Jackson "ignorant and a liar," accusing him of speaking on Argentina without understanding its history. She emphasized that in her country, Black people never faced the same racial segregation as in the United States.

She pointed out the stark contrast between Argentina and the U.S., where nearly 250 years of legalized slavery persisted until 1865, followed by a century of Jim Crow laws until 1964. Fleitas argued that generalizing and ignoring historical facts only fuels division rather than combating racism.

Fleitas advised Jackson to examine America's own history before casting judgment on Argentina, calling it the "absolute bare minimum for an honest debate." She even suggested a boycott of Jackson's films as a form of protest against his comments.

The post that ignited this controversy read: "Dear Black People... Please do not cheer or root for Argentina to win the FIFA World Cup. Argentina has historically been one of, if not the most racist, countries in the world. If you are a Black person cheering for Argentina, this is what you look like to me. We hear you loud and clear."

Accompanying this message was an edited image of Jackson's character Stephen from Django Unchained, wearing an Argentina jersey. This choice of imagery was loaded with implications, as Stephen represents the "Uncle Tom" archetype in the film.

The term "Uncle Tom" originates from Harriet Beecher Stowe's 1852 novel Uncle Tom's Cabin and carries heavy negative connotations within the Black community. It is often used to describe individuals perceived as excessively subservient to white people or betraying their own community for acceptance.

In Django Unchained, Stephen's character exemplifies this archetype through his unwavering loyalty to his white master while displaying hostility toward other Black characters. The implication of Jackson's post was clear: cheering for Argentina equated to embodying this derogatory stereotype.

The backlash against Jackson's comments highlights the complexities of race relations and historical context in discussions about racism across different nations.
