Senator Kaine Delivers Stark Warning to Pam Bondi’s Successor

Apr 05 2026

“The attorney general is meant to embody the nation’s law enforcement integrity,” asserted Senator Tim Kaine (D-Va.) during a recent appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” His comments came in the wake of President Donald Trump’s decision to dismiss Pam Bondi from her role as attorney general.

In a pointed exchange with moderator Kristen Welker, Kaine remarked, “Bondi threw all that away, and she still got fired.” He elaborated, “You can either serve as an attorney general who upholds the rule of law, risking the ire of Donald Trump, or you can cater to his whims and still find yourself out of a job.”

Kaine criticized Bondi for compromising her integrity, stating, “She basically sold out her own integrity,” adding that this led her to a point where she “couldn’t even look at herself in a mirror.” The senator emphasized that her fate should serve as a cautionary tale for any future nominees for the position.

“That should be a lesson to whoever is the next nominee for AG,” he continued. “Be the nation’s chief law enforcement officer, and don’t let the president cause you to trim your conscience or become a toady.”

When asked about his potential support for Trump’s next attorney general pick, Kaine responded thoughtfully. “I never start off as an automatic no,” he stated. “We’ll see who the president proposes. If you get elected as president, that should carry a mandate to assemble an executive team. If someone lacks qualifications or character, I’ll vote no. But I never start off as a no.”

Trump announced Bondi’s firing last week via his Truth Social platform after various reports confirmed her dismissal. According to sources, Bondi had requested to retain her position until summer, but Trump declined her request. Reports indicate that her termination stemmed from her mishandling of the Jeffrey Epstein files and her failure to pursue legal action against Trump’s political adversaries.

For those interested in Kaine’s full remarks, his appearance on “Meet the Press” is available for viewing, with key comments starting at the 11:54 mark.
