Sydney Sweeney’s ‘Euphoria’ Character Unleashes Controversial Slur After Political Jab
“I just feel like American men have been treated like second-class citizens.” That’s the kind of incendiary rhetoric Sydney Sweeney’s character, Cassie, is serving up in the latest episode of HBO’s “Euphoria.” The show is blurring the lines between fiction and reality, mirroring the backlash Sweeney has faced as she’s been dubbed a “MAGA Barbie” amid political firestorms.

Last summer, Sweeney found herself in hot water after her American Eagle ad caught the eye of Trump and his crew. Add to that her Republican registration, and it’s no wonder fans are questioning where Cassie ends and Sweeney begins.
In Episode 5, titled “This Little Piggy,” Cassie dives headfirst into sex work to “bring home the bacon” after her husband Nate (Jacob Elordi) tanks financially. With her former bestie-turned-manager Maddy (Alexa Demie) by her side, Cassie’s OnlyFans following skyrockets, and she hits the podcast circuit to rake in more male subscribers.
During one of her podcast appearances, Cassie doesn’t hold back. “In the past, men used to be hunters and gatherers and protectors,” she declares, lamenting that today’s men are “forced to walk around on their tippy toes.”
But it gets even wilder. On a podcast hosted by Trisha Paytas, Cassie doubles down on her right-wing views, claiming that if a man wants a girlfriend who can cook or clean, “he might as well be screaming the N-word.” The stunned host retorts, “Well, you sound like a Democrat,” to which Cassie laughs off before dropping an ableist slur: “I’m not r****ded.”
Is this a reflection of Cassie’s true beliefs or just a calculated move to boost her OnlyFans empire? Either way, it’s working. Maddy quips, “The angrier these idiots get, the more money you make.”
Fans on social media are buzzing about Cassie’s audacity, with many unable to distinguish between the character and Sweeney herself. “I just know Sydney Sweeney couldn’t WAIT to say this line,” one user tweeted.
In real life, Sweeney has largely sidestepped the political controversies swirling around her. She did address the American Eagle backlash in a recent interview, expressing surprise at the reaction. “I don’t support the views some people chose to connect to the campaign,” she stated, emphasizing her desire for unity over divisiveness.
But Cassie’s ableist slur isn’t the only jaw-dropper in this episode. The series has long faced criticism for hypersexualizing its characters, and Episode 5 takes it to new heights with explicit scenes featuring Sweeney. One particularly shocking moment shows her character going topless as she interrupts a businessman in his office jerking off to her OnlyFans content.
This season of “Euphoria” has been marked by abrupt story shifts and rage-baiting slurs, straying far from the groundbreaking teen drama that captivated audiences in its first two seasons. With cliffhangers hinting at major character deaths, where this wild ride goes next is anyone’s guess. But one thing’s for sure: it’ll be deeply unsettling.
