‘The Delusions of a Deranged Monarch:’ Democrats Erupt Over Trump’s Bizarre Speech

Jul 17 2026

“Tonight, America watched the ramblings of a mad king,” declared California Governor Gavin Newsom, slamming President Donald Trump’s latest primetime address. Trump’s speech, rife with unverified claims, insisted the U.S. electoral system is riddled with “shocking vulnerabilities” and alleged a Chinese plot to influence the 2020 vote.

Newsom, eyeing a presidential run in 2028, warned that Trump’s rhetoric aims to instill suspicion and distrust ahead of the upcoming midterms. With Republicans bracing for a potential wipeout due to the president’s plummeting approval ratings, Newsom emphasized the urgency of voter mobilization.

“Before a single vote has been cast, he’s already laying the groundwork to rig this election and convince YOU not to trust the results if they don’t go his way,” Newsom added, urging Americans to organize and vote in November.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris joined the fray, accusing Trump of engaging in “voter suppression.” In a multi-tweet thread, she criticized his administration for failing to address rising living costs and expressed concern over accountability at the ballot box.

“The president is scared of your power, and he wants you to believe your vote does not matter,” Harris stated, warning voters that Trump seeks to undermine confidence in the electoral process to keep them from voting.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer condemned Trump’s fixation on grievances and conspiracy theories while Americans grapple with inflation, high grocery prices, and cuts to healthcare. “This president sadly wallows in grievance, vengeance and conspiracy while Americans want their leaders to boldly tackle persistent inflation,” Schumer said.

Hakeem Jeffries, Schumer’s counterpart in the House, was blunt: “Donald Trump is a feeble, unhinged conspiracy-peddling 80-year-old failed president.” He added that the economy is in shambles under Trump’s leadership, a sentiment echoed by many Democrats.

Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff labeled Trump “failed and desperate,” accusing him of signaling intent to attack elections and voting rights, reminiscent of his actions in 2020. “Our answer will be overwhelming,” Ossoff promised. “The power of the presidency is nothing compared to the power of the people.”

Independent Senator Bernie Sanders criticized Trump for “spewing conspiracy theories” while ignoring the financial struggles faced by American households. Meanwhile, Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin expressed fears on MS NOW’s The Last Word that Trump might resort to military intervention to seize ballots, stating he is “willing to really do anything to win.”

Trump’s address was notably absent from ABC and NBC broadcasts, prompting him to lash out at these networks as part of a “plot” against him. He suggested they should have their licenses revoked for not airing his claims.

In a further escalation, Trump alleged that U.S. intelligence officials withheld information regarding China’s supposed meddling as part of an attack on the “deep state” in Washington, D.C. Beijing responded by dismissing Trump’s allegations as baseless, reiterating its commitment to non-intervention in other states’ affairs and denying any interest in influencing U.S. elections.
