‘Tired of Tranquility’: Trump, Hegseth Race to Rationalize Iran Assault in ‘SNL’ Cold Open
“Saturday Night Live” quickly turned its comedic lens on President Donald Trump, portrayed by James Austin Johnson, just hours after he announced military strikes against Iran. The skit opened with Trump declaring, “I launched this attack after me and my Board of Peace decided that we were bored of peace.”
In a humorous twist, the faux president continued, “As we all know, Iran has been two weeks away from developing a nuclear weapon for like the last 15 years or something so we had to act now. And we’re doing war.” The absurdity escalated as he broke into song, crooning, “‘War! What is it good for? Distracting from the Epstein files!’”
The sketch took a darker turn as Trump attempted to rationalize the administration's decision to target Iran, which resulted in the death of its supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. “We had to strike in the early hours of Saturday, which has two advantages militarily: one, it’s after the stock market closes for the weekend, and two, it’s to cause immeasurable fear, rage and chaos in the ‘SNL’ writers room,” he quipped, referencing a scrapped “State of the Union”-themed sketch.
Next, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, played by Colin Jost, entered the scene to explain why Americans should express gratitude for the military action. “We took out a horrendous, horrible leader who was oppressing his own people!” he emphasized, underscoring the administration's narrative.
Trump then reappeared, cautioning viewers, “But don’t get any ideas!” The cold open concluded with a blend of humor and biting satire, encapsulating the chaotic nature of political discourse surrounding military interventions.
