Top Trump Aide Justifies President's Celebration of Robert Mueller's Passing
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stood by President Donald Trump’s controversial post celebrating the death of Robert Mueller, asserting that the president deserves “empathy” due to the challenges he and his family have faced amid ongoing investigations.
When pressed on whether Trump’s Truth Social message, which included the phrase “Good, I’m glad he’s dead,” was fitting, Bessent contended that the public cannot fully grasp the extent of Trump's experiences. “I think that given what has been done to President Trump and his family, it is impossible for either of us to understand what he has been through,” he remarked during an appearance on Meet the Press.
Bessent emphasized the need for compassion regarding the scrutiny directed at Trump, referencing the 2022 raid on Mar-a-Lago, despite Mueller's lack of involvement in that incident. “I think that we should have a little empathy for what has been done to him and his family,” he stated.

However, when asked if a sitting president should celebrate the death of any American, Bessent sidestepped a direct answer. Mueller, who passed away at 81, was known for leading the investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election. Following the announcement of his death, Trump expressed relief, stating, “He can no longer hurt innocent people!”
Trump's disdain for Mueller stemmed from the latter's investigation into potential collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign. The two-year probe resulted in six indictments against former Trump associates but did not conclusively accuse Trump of any crime. Instead, it highlighted instances of behavior that could be interpreted as obstructive.
Mueller's investigation was just one of many legal challenges Trump faced after leaving office, including inquiries into classified documents that led to the Mar-a-Lago raid, which a federal judge ultimately dismissed.

Bessent’s comments seemed to connect Trump's celebration of Mueller's death to his feelings about the raid, which he has condemned multiple times. “I was with the president in the green room at Davos, and there was a video playing of what may have been an illegal raid on his home at Mar-a-Lago,” Bessent recounted. “They are going through his wife's wardrobe. And I watched the look in his eye, and I think that neither one of us can understand what has been done to the president and to his family.”
Welker pointed out that Mueller did not orchestrate the raid, yet Bessent maintained that Trump's reaction to Mueller's death is likely influenced by his personal sentiments regarding the various investigations.
