Trump Announces Deployment of ICE Agents to Airports Amid DHS Funding Standoff
On Saturday, President Trump declared his intention to deploy ICE agents to airports nationwide starting Monday, a move that coincides with a protracted impasse between Senate Republicans and Democrats regarding funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
"If the Democrats do not allow for Just and Proper Security at our Airports, and elsewhere throughout our Country, ICE will do the job far better than ever done before!" Trump asserted in a series of posts on Truth Social. He further emphasized, "I look forward to moving ICE in on Monday, and have already told them to, 'GET READY.'
This announcement followed an earlier post where Trump threatened to station ICE agents at airports if Democrats failed to agree on security measures. "If the Radical Left Democrats don’t immediately sign an agreement to let our Country, in particular, our Airports, be FREE and SAFE again, I will move our brilliant and patriotic ICE Agents to the Airports where they will do Security like no one has ever seen before," he wrote.
In his initial post, Trump indicated that the deployment would focus on “the immediate arrest of all Illegal Immigrants who have come into our Country.” This declaration comes as Senate Republicans blocked a Democratic initiative aimed at passing a stand-alone bill to fund the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in a 41-49 vote. Just a day prior, Senate Democrats rejected Republican efforts to fully fund DHS, which has been partially shut down since mid-February.
Senator Patty Murray, D-Wash., a key figure in negotiations, criticized Republicans for linking TSA funding to ICE funding. “Today, Senate Republicans voted against paying TSA agents because they insist on tying TSA funding to their push to give even more money to ICE — without basic reforms. That is not how this should work — and it is just plain wrong that Republicans are preventing TSA agents from getting paid while airport lines grow longer across the country,” she stated.
The ongoing shutdown has resulted in TSA officers conducting security checks at U.S. airports going unpaid, leading to significant callouts and extended wait times for travelers. Notably, ICE remains unaffected by the shutdown due to receiving $75 billion in additional funds from last year's major legislative package.
In February, Democrats vowed to halt DHS operations until Republicans consented to new regulations on ICE agents, including mandatory identification and restrictions on face coverings. This decision followed the tragic deaths of two Americans during a federal immigration operation in Minnesota.
Amidst these tensions, bipartisan discussions resumed on Capitol Hill this week. Trump's border czar, Tom Homan, engaged with a bipartisan group of senators twice but had a third meeting postponed. Lawmakers expressed hope for a rescheduled meeting soon.
Senator John Hoeven, R-N.D., revealed that Republicans had presented a new proposal this week. “We’ve offered body cams, more training, limiting arrests for sensitive areas like churches and hospitals and so forth; it’s a long list,” he noted. “I think the Democrats need to come back to us now and talk to us about what they’re willing to do.”
Additionally, senators on a key committee reviewed Trump's nomination of Senator Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., to lead DHS. Earlier this month, Trump announced that Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem would resign at the end of March.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., attributed the worsening situation at U.S. airports to Democratic resistance in funding DHS. “Thousands of Homeland Security employees have been working without pay for more than a month. The problems of having an unfunded Homeland Security Department continue to multiply,” he remarked.
In response, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., condemned the political maneuvering surrounding TSA funding. “It is unacceptable for workers and travelers in entire airports to get taken hostage in political games,” he stated. “Democrats want to pay TSA workers ASAP with no strings attached.”
