Trump Checks In on Mahomes: BBQ Owners Spill the Beans on QB's Recovery

May 06 2026

President Donald Trump is all about that football life, and he’s got his eyes on Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. After last season’s brutal injury, the 79-year-old commander-in-chief made it clear he’s invested in Mahomes’ recovery.

During a recent White House BBQ with Slap’s BBQ owners, Mike and Joe Pearce, Trump cut straight to the chase: “Most importantly, how’s Mahomes doing?” The question came as he hosted the brothers on May 4, and it was caught on video shared via X.

Despite the Pearce brothers assuring him that Mahomes was on the mend, Trump wasn’t buying it entirely. “Is he going to be OK?” he pressed, adding, “You tell the people we love him. He’s gotta be OK.” Talk about a fan!

But wait, there’s more! Trump wanted to know if Mahomes would be ready to hit the field for the 2026-2027 NFL season opener. The BBQ duo expressed their hopes that Mahomes would be back in action by week one, although the NFL schedule was still under wraps at that point.

“He’s gonna be close right?” Trump asked, clearly invested in the quarterback’s status. He didn’t hold back on his admiration either, calling Mahomes a “fantastic guy.”

Curious about any personal interactions, Trump quizzed the brothers on whether they’ve crossed paths with Mahomes or any Chiefs players. They revealed that the team has been frequenting their restaurant quite a bit. Sounds like a match made in BBQ heaven!

“You let him know, I want him to get better fast, I hope he plays the whole season,” Trump reiterated, showing his unwavering support.

Mahomes’ season ended abruptly last year after tearing his ACL and ICL in December 2025. Post-surgery, he took to Instagram to share updates on his recovery journey. “The doctor kind of gives you goals to get to,” he explained in a January video. “I just try to maximize those—they hold me back because I always want to go a little bit further. I want to be ready for Week 1.”

He added, “The doctors said I could be, but I can’t predict what happens throughout the process. You want to be out there healthy and give us the best chance to win. I hope to do some things in [Organized Team Activities] and training camp, and be able to do a lot there.”

Coach Andy Reid is also keeping the faith regarding Mahomes’ return. “Every player is different. I will tell you though, I would never bet against him,” Reid said during the NFL’s annual meetings in March. “He’s going to put in the time and effort and always push it but within reason, so he doesn’t take steps back.”
