Trump Defends Controversial Image of Himself as a Doctor Amid Backlash
Donald Trump’s Truth Social account recently featured an image portraying him in a white robe, reminiscent of Jesus Christ, which has since been removed following intense backlash from far-right Christian leaders who labeled it blasphemous.
The AI-generated image surfaced shortly after Trump criticized Pope Leo XIV, calling him “WEAK” on crime and “terrible” on foreign policy during a Sunday night tirade. In the image, Trump is depicted with a glowing hand placed on the forehead of a man in a hospital bed, surrounded by patriotic symbols like the U.S. flag and the Statue of Liberty.
“I did post it and I thought it was me as a doctor and had to do with Red Cross,” Trump stated during an impromptu press conference outside the White House. “It’s supposed to be me as a doctor, making people better. And I do make people better. I make people a lot better.”
He dismissed comparisons to Jesus as “fake news” and refused to apologize to the Pope, asserting that the pontiff had made incorrect statements.
The controversial post remained online for over 12 hours before its removal. Sean Feucht, a Christian performer collaborating with the Trump administration for upcoming worship events, expressed his disapproval: “This should be deleted immediately. There’s no context where this is acceptable.”
Riley Gaines, a prominent figure in the administration’s campaign against transgender participation in women’s sports, questioned Trump’s motives: “Why? Seriously, I cannot understand why he'd post this. Is he looking for a response? Does he actually think this?”

Right-wing commentator Brilyn Hollyhand condemned the image as “gross blasphemy,” emphasizing that faith should not be used as a prop. He referenced Trump’s past assassination attempt, stating, “The same God who saved Trump’s life from that bullet sent His son Jesus to die for our sins.”
Outkick’s Jon Root echoed similar sentiments, labeling the portrayal of Trump as Jesus as “reprehensible.”
Isabel Brown, a Catholic podcaster, criticized the post as “disgusting and unacceptable,” arguing it misrepresents the American public's revival of faith amidst cultural challenges.
Michael Knowles from The Daily Wire urged Trump to delete the image for both spiritual and political reasons, regardless of intent.
Trump has historically engaged with the Christian nationalist movement, which advocates for Christianity's integration into law and society. This faction has gained significant influence within Republican politics and media.
Despite this support, Trump's explicit self-portrayal as Jesus—especially following his attack on the Pope—provoked swift backlash from evangelical supporters. Daily Wire contributor Megan Basham questioned Trump’s judgment: “I don’t know if the President thought he was being funny or if he is under the influence of some substance... But he needs to take this down immediately.”

Since taking office, Trump has actively sought to appeal to Christian voters, establishing initiatives aimed at protecting their rights. He directed the Department of Justice to prosecute anti-Christian violence and appointed Paula White-Cain as a senior adviser in the White House Faith Office.
As the Religious Liberty Commission prepares to meet, Cardinal Timothy Dolan criticized Trump’s remarks about Pope Leo as “entirely inappropriate and disrespectful,” insisting that an apology is warranted.
“It is the Pope’s prerogative to articulate Catholic doctrine,” Dolan stated, advocating for dialogue between Catholic officials and members of the Trump administration rather than social media disputes.
