Trump's Outrageous Attack on Pope Leo Sparks Backlash from Catholics

Apr 13 2026

Donald Trump unleashed a torrent of criticism against Pope Leo XIV late Sunday, igniting outrage among Catholics and even some of his staunchest supporters. The former president labeled the Pope as “weak” on crime and “terrible” on foreign policy, a move that followed weeks of tension between his administration and the Vatican regarding the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Social media erupted with backlash from Catholics who view the Pope as the successor to St. Peter, one of Jesus Christ's apostles. As the leader of 1.4 billion Catholics globally, Leo has emerged as a vocal critic of Trump’s stance on Iran, pledging to “speak out loudly against war” and asserting that the Christian message is being “abused.”

Trump's incendiary remarks, coupled with an AI-generated image portraying him as Jesus, drew sharp condemnation from Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. He expressed his disapproval on social media, stating, “Your Excellency Pope Leo XIV, I condemn the insult to Your Excellency and declare that the desecration of Jesus (peace be upon him) is unacceptable to any free person.”

Meanwhile, Trump faced criticism from within his own MAGA base for his comments about the Pope. Massimo Faggioli, an Italian historian specializing in Vatican affairs, remarked that Trump’s latest outburst clarified the already strained relationship between his administration and the Catholic Church. He drew parallels between Trump’s comments and historical attempts by leaders like Hitler and Mussolini to sway papal support during World War II, stating, “Not even Hitler or Mussolini attacked the pope so directly and publicly.”

The backlash intensified as former ally Marjorie Taylor Greene condemned Trump’s portrayal of himself as Christ, labeling it “more than blasphemy” and indicative of an “Antichrist spirit.” She criticized Trump for attacking the Pope during Orthodox Easter, emphasizing that Leo’s opposition to Trump’s policies in Iran warranted respect.

Riley Gaines, a prominent Christian conservative, echoed similar sentiments, questioning Trump’s motives behind the controversial post. “Why? Seriously, I cannot understand why he'd post this. Is he looking for a response? Does he actually think this?” she pondered, adding that humility would benefit Trump.

Bishop Robert Barron of the Diocese of Winona-Rochester labeled Trump’s comments as “entirely inappropriate and disrespectful,” urging serious Catholics within the Trump administration to engage in dialogue with Vatican officials. He specifically mentioned U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance as potential participants in such discussions.

Archbishop Paul S. Coakley, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, expressed disappointment over Trump’s remarks. “Pope Leo is not his rival; nor is the Pope a politician. He is the Vicar of Christ who speaks from the truth of the Gospel,” he stated.

In his post, Trump suggested that Leo was elected Pope merely because he was American, implying it was a strategic move to manage relations with him. Leo ascended to the papacy in May 2025 after Pope Francis's death.

On his return to Washington, Trump reiterated his disapproval of Leo’s views, calling him “very liberal” and expressing disdain for any papal stance that seemed to endorse nuclear armament. He criticized Leo for addressing the “atrocious” conflict in Iran and urged him to seek a resolution to end hostilities.

Leo had previously called for reflection on how migrants are treated in the U.S., further complicating Trump's already tumultuous relationship with the Vatican. This tension echoes Trump's earlier conflicts with Pope Francis, who had criticized Trump's immigration policies during his initial presidential campaign.
