Trump's $92 Million Birthday Bash: A Self-Indulgent Spectacle for the Ages

Donald Trump, now one of the oldest serving US presidents, is throwing an extravagant birthday bash that includes a UFC fight on the White House's South Lawn. This spectacle marks a new low in presidential self-indulgence, with costs soaring to an estimated $92 million.

A lawsuit from the Public Integrity Project reveals Trump purchased up to $50,000 in stock in TKO Group Holdings, the parent company of UFC, earlier this year. This raises eyebrows about the motivations behind his lavish birthday plans.

Miles Taylor, former Chief of Staff at the US Department of Homeland Security during Trump's first term, claims Trump had even grander ambitions. Taylor recalls Trump’s fascination with military parades after witnessing one in France in 2017. He wanted a similar display down Pennsylvania Avenue, prompting eye-rolls from his cabinet.

Despite initial enthusiasm, Trump's military parade plans faced significant backlash. The projected cost of this parade was around $92 million, with Pentagon experts warning that driving tanks through Washington would cause extensive damage.

Resistance from local officials, including the mayor of Washington, led to the parade's quiet demise. Taylor noted that the event was more about boosting Trump's image than celebrating America. "America wasn’t going to throw him a $92 million birthday party parade to feed his ego," he stated.

Today’s White House atmosphere is markedly different. Those who once opposed Trump have been removed or silenced, allowing his extravagant desires to run rampant. Taylor describes this as a reflection of the current state of the American republic.

This weekend's celebrations coincide with events for the 250th anniversary of American independence. A state fair-style event will occur from June 25 to July 10 across the National Mall.

The Freedom 250 organizing committee claims that 56 US states and territories will participate in the 16-day event. However, several musical acts, including Martina McBride and Bret Michaels, withdrew after realizing the concert was more about honoring Trump than celebrating American history.

In response to these withdrawals, Trump dismissed the acts and proclaimed he would host "the Greatest Rally, EVER!" He labeled it the "Rally to end all Rallies," promising that some artists would still perform.

Taylor argues this entire situation illustrates how Trump has commandeered a national celebration for his own benefit. He highlights that fighters at tomorrow's UFC tournament will enter the cage from inside the Oval Office itself. "If you wanted a single image to tell you where America now finds itself, you could not invent a more precise one," he remarked.
