Trump's Bold Move: U.S. to Escort 'Innocent Bystander' Ships Through Hormuz

May 05 2026

President Trump is stepping into the fray, declaring that starting Monday, the U.S. will escort ships through the contentious Strait of Hormuz in a so-called “humanitarian gesture” dubbed Project Freedom.

In a sprawling Truth Social rant, he warned that vessels from “innocent bystander” nations—those not entangled in his war with Iran—are running dangerously low on essentials like food and supplies.

“Countries from all over the World, almost all of which are not involved in the Middle Eastern dispute going on so visibly, and violently, for all to see, have asked the United States if we could help free up their Ships, which are locked up in the Strait of Hormuz, on something which they have absolutely nothing to do with,” Trump declared late Sunday.

“They are merely neutral and innocent bystanders! For the good of Iran, the Middle East, and the United States, we have told these Countries that we will guide their Ships safely out of these restricted Waterways, so that they can freely and ably get on with their business.”

U.S. Central Command (Centcom) is gearing up for this operation, deploying 15,000 troops, over 100 aircraft, and a fleet of guided-missile destroyers to ensure the mission’s success.

“The Ship movement is merely meant to free up people, companies, and Countries that have done absolutely nothing wrong — They are victims of circumstance,” Trump continued, adding a touch of bravado.

“I think it would go a long way in showing Goodwill on behalf of all of those who have been fighting so strenuously over the last number of months.”

But don’t expect Iran to roll over. Major General Ali Abdollahi of Iran’s military issued a stark warning: “We warn that any foreign armed force — especially the aggressive US military — if they intend to approach or enter the Strait of Hormuz, will be targeted and attacked.”

He emphasized that the security of the Strait is firmly in Iranian hands and that any passage must be coordinated with their armed forces.

On Monday, the Joint Maritime Information Center announced an “enhanced security area” south of standard shipping routes, advising vessels to work closely with Omani authorities due to expected high traffic.

“Our support for this defensive mission is essential to regional security and the global economy as we also maintain the naval blockade,” Centcom commander Admiral Brad Cooper stated.

Mariners have faced dire conditions in the Gulf since February 28 when U.S. and Israeli airstrikes against Iran prompted Tehran to close the Strait of Hormuz and impose a toll system on maritime traffic.

This latest maneuver comes as peace talks between the U.S. and Iran remain stalled, with economic repercussions from the ongoing conflict escalating.

“I am fully aware that my representatives are having very positive discussions with the country of Iran, and that these discussions could lead to something very positive for all,” Trump claimed in his Sunday post.

However, Iranian lawmaker Ibrahim Azizi cautioned that U.S. involvement in managing shipping through the Strait would breach any ceasefire agreements. “The Strait and the Persian Gulf would not be managed by Trump’s delusional posts," he asserted.
