Trump Tees Off with Celebs Amid Soaring Gas Prices and Iran War Fallout

May 05 2026

President Donald Trump mingled with A-list golfers at the PGA Tour held at his Doral resort in Miami this weekend, all while his approval ratings plummeted amid a spiraling economy and the ongoing war in Iran.

From a spectator’s box, Trump watched Cameron Young nail his final shot on the 18th hole, a moment captured by eager onlookers. A video shared by White House spokesperson Margo Martin showcased Trump waving to a throng of cheering fans, pumping his fist as chants of “USA!” erupted from the crowd.

His two adult sons, Don Jr. and Eric, joined the festivities, along with Eric's wife, Lara Trump, and their kids, creating a family affair amidst the chaos.

As an avid golfer, Trump took to the course with tournament players over the weekend, according to a CBS announcer. But not all was smooth sailing; a man was arrested by Secret Service for causing a ruckus and clashing physically with an agent during the event.

“During the encounter, the individual became disruptive and failed to comply with lawful orders,” said Acting Special Agent in Charge Michael Townsend. “He then made physical contact with a member of the Secret Service and was taken into custody without further incident.”

The PGA Tour hadn’t graced one of Trump’s properties since 2016, when Cadillac pulled sponsorship and the championship fled Doral to escape the stigma surrounding the Trump brand. That brand became controversial early in Trump’s presidency due to its frequent use for GOP events.

Fast forward to 2026, and brands are back as Trump’s second term hits its halfway mark amid an unpopular war in Iran, skyrocketing gas prices, and an economy still reeling from Covid-era inflation.

Trump’s appearance came as the White House remained eerily silent on the Iran conflict, now entering its third month with no resolution in sight. Talks that were once underway in Pakistan, led by Vice President JD Vance, have collapsed, with Tehran now issuing deadlines for peace talks after missing several of Trump’s own.

The PGA’s return is also linked to the downfall of LIV Golf, the Saudi-backed venture that Trump and his family had hoped would rival the PGA Tour. The Saudi Public Investment Fund announced it would cease funding LIV by the end of 2026, likely sealing its fate.

Meanwhile, gas prices surged past $4.46 a gallon nationally for low-grade fuel, prompting experts to warn that costs would likely continue to rise throughout the summer travel season. Chevron’s CEO Mike Wirth appeared on CBS’s Face the Nation, countering claims from the White House that price shocks would be temporary.

“The shock absorbers are being drained out of the system,” Wirth stated. “Supply is getting tighter and resupplying is becoming more difficult, increasing volatility.”

He noted that rising jet fuel prices are already pushing budget airline Spirit to the brink of collapse, potentially forcing families to rethink or cancel summer vacations altogether. Yet, a global travel survey from April revealed that 51 percent of Americans still plan to travel internationally this summer.

"It’s not flowing today," Wirth added. "We’re seeing jet fuel tighten rapidly in Europe and Asia, leading airlines to adjust their flight schedules. Aviation is clearly an area where things could worsen in the coming weeks."
